2000 GMC SIERRA 2500 LIFTER NOISE

I have a 2000 GMC 6.0 with 165.000 miles. This stared about a week ago and seems like it has gotten louder since, but just on startup. On cold starts or after it sets for an hour or better it sounds like a lifter is not pumped up, if driving with windows up kind of sounds like an exhaust leak. After engine has run for better than 10 or 15 minutes noise finally quietens down but not completely. Oil pressure seems to stay around 45 to 55. From what I understand this engine has the hydraulic roller lifters. Any ideas whats up??? Also if it is the lifters, can the be changed with out pulling the heads? Where and what brand would you recommend purchasing? Thanks fo any info.

a temporary "fix" for this issue is just to use a heavier grade oil. if that doesn't quiet it down you know perhaps that it isn't the lifters.

Try a cup of tranny fluid, Dextron, or whatever, in the crankcase. Or there are lots of lifter products at your local part store. I would certainly try that first. I assume your oil has been changed recently, and the level is good. You don't have to pull the heads, but you do have to remove the intake, and valve covers.

I have a 2003 gmc Sierra half ton 4.8 liter that has a knock that sounds like lifters

There is,If you do the lifter you could be after something else,The noise sounds like a collapsed lifter,A collapse lifter can cause a misfire,The 2003 GMC sierra or I should say the 4.8 engines suffer from a cut O-ring between the oil pump screen and the oil pump causing oil areation, resulting in lifter noise,The noise will be present a cold start and then diminish at warm up.12_3_2012_8_08_44_am.gif

My 2000 GMC 2500 Sierra 2500 has lifter "clacking noises" and I want to change the lifters. How do I go about it?

Probably not lifters. Huge well documented issues with piston skirt slap in the vortec engines when cold. Pistons made at one location and blocks at another. Manufacturer will not make any repairs. So don't go there, you'll be wasting your time. Lots of documentations from both manufacture and owners of no damage noted after high mileage. Options are to live with it, let it warm first before driving or rebuild engine- bore one size and replace pistons with a better one with a coating on walls. Did one for a gentleman with 59,000 miles 3 years ago and he's totally happy. He could not live with the noise it was making. My Wifes 2000 Yukon has same problem. If you have a diesel.. not my area.
Good luck

google: vortec piston slap, read , get mad, welcome to the club!

07 GMC sierra 111,000 miles service regularly have whats sounds like lifter noise just started oil level good, could it be time for a tune up?

When you replace spark plug look at the gap is it worn(just compare it to a new on)now is this noise at idle or are you acclerating at idle its a lifter noise. If its at acceleration then time for spark plugs fuel filter.Remeber to use the proper weight on it.Dont listen to someone that says you can use a thicker oil. Make sure the oil you use has not been strip of zinc which API has removed and allot of premature engine failure are occuring. Use mobil stay away from penzoil they have no anti wear additives engine are wearing out quickly.

Coolant in my 2000 gmc sierra is disappearing. replaced the water pump a few weeks ago and I do not see a leak. head gasket seems fine as well.

the answer to this requires a pressure test. If it looses pressure, keep looking until you find it.

When cranked: ticking noise, low oil pressure

I have a 2002 with 130,000 and it ticks, but goes away after 2 min,if yours continues to tick you may have a rocker arm that is getting lose or a lifter that is not pumping up.
