The only true tools you need is your hands, pliers/blade screwdriver. The fuel filter is located in the undercarriage rear adjacent to the left side of the fuel tank. It is bolted with a singular screw onto the uniframe just to the side of the rear-left wheel. The filter is equipped with quick-release connecters that require a firm grip and tug, releasing the fuel lines from the filter. You might want to use a fat blade screwdriver and/or pliers to pull back the connecters, only don't use too much force as this will crack the plastic keepers, defeating the entire job. Be patient but firm and all will work out.

check the EVAP canister it is right next to fuel filter could be pcm needs update to fix false codes. Here is a old hillbilly trick that may help put saliva on the seal of gas cap when you fill up every time that may work for you.

Have you reset the fuel pump switch...bled the lines? Try starting fluid for a few times then look at these issues.

Yes it is, with a set of needle nose pliers, you should be able to pinch the plastic clips and get it off. I ended up cutting mine off though, so some can be a pain.

It sounds like it may be the fuel pump. Have someone turn the ignition key to the 'On' position (don't start car) and listen to hear if you have a whining coming from your fuel tank. If not, your pump is bad. If that's not the culprit, then check your gas. You may have had a bad fill up. Try adding some octane boost to your gas and changing your fuel filter.

Do not cut the lines. the filter will slip off the lines after you remove the support clips..

I happen to own a 2002 alero, and my wife called me and said the same problem had happened. Change your fuel filter.

you will have to jack up the rear end and crawl under the car its just in front of the tires in the middle fuel filter is in front of the gas tank under the car it has two clips you have to pinch hard to pull off the hose the undo the bolt
