The IPC illuminates the traction off indicator when the following occurs:

- For Chevrolet only, the shift lever is in FIRST (1) or SECOND (2) gear. The EBCM receives a class 2 message from the powertrain control module (PCM) indicating the gear position.
- For Pontiac and Oldsmobile only, the body control module (BCM) detects that the traction control switch is pressed (signal circuit is low). The EBCM receives a class 2 message from the BCM indicating the switch status.
- The BCM detects that the park brake is engaged (signal circuit is low) and that the engine is on. The EBCM receives a class 2 message from the BCM indicating the park brake status.
- The PCM detects certain malfunctions and is unable to perform torque reduction requests from the EBCM. The EBCM receives a class 2 message from the PCM indicating that traction control cannot be performed.
• The EBCM detects a malfunction in the traction control system. The IPC receives class 2 messages from the EBCM requesting illumination of both the service vehicle soon and traction off indicators.

Buick LeSabre turn off traction control Questions & Answers ...
It is not supposed to. The traction control gives power to opposing wheels and applies brakes in milliseconds to prevent total loss of control of the car. The computer immediately takes over and prevents 4wd that could send the car into a worse skid.. You are talking about ice which is very different from snow where traction is concerned. The grinding you hear could have been the anti-lock system being activated.
This button is for the traction control, when you push it it will say trac off or trac on . this will be displayed on the dash, this is for better traction on snow or wet roads and it keeps the wheels from spinning out, hope this helps, look in your manual under traction control, good luck.
usualy there is a small button on the side of the shifter if its floor shift if there is then you can push it and a light will come on saying atc that means your traction control is off. if there isn't then it's ether automatic or unswitchable that means you can't turn it off. its best to look through the owners manual or ask a chevy dealer.
If your ABS light is on as well, have a shop scan it (it requires a special scanner). If it's just your Trac light without ABS, it is most likely a sensor under the hood at fault. If you are getting a check engine light as well, get the codes read!
This happened to me without an ABS light and it was the upstream O2 sensor. The reason it throws the Trac light is because if any components that the traction control uses (ignition, fuel) are affected by a bad sensor, the PCM shuts down traction.
In fact, when I replaced the O2 sensor, a handful of other little issues resolved as well.
If you do have an ABS light on, it could very well be a wheel speed sensor.
2003 Cavalier's are known for bad wiring harnesses. Get a good technician to find and replace the bad harness and your problems will go away. Sometimes, it may be more than one harness.
