A light came on that I dont know the meaning of. Its a U-shape with an exclimation point in the middle. Is it low transmission fluid?

The car is now quite old, and the yellow gear ("cog") light indicates that the hydraulic pressure in the transmission is incorrect. Check fluid level and, if the fluid is murky or off-color, have the transmission serviced and the filter replaced.

Looks like your computer is detecting a transmission/transaxle problem. Have you had your filter changed in the tansmission yet? Are you a little low on transmission fluid? Is the transmission fluid high like it's overfilled? Is your transmission fluid brownish and smell burnt? Just a couple of things you might need to look at. You may or even should take it to a reputible transmission shop and have them run a scan on it to see what the problem is. I know this doesn't seem like much help to you at this point and time but I would have it taken care of before any damage may happen.

ok if it is indeed a transmission light...does your car drive funny in any way? since it came on? anything at all? some ford transmissions are know to have a falty transmission fluid level sensor. or your transmission is indeed low on transmission fluid. If you know where the transmission dip stick is pull it out with the engine on, wipe off and put it back in, wait a second and pull it out again and compare the actuall fluid level to where it should be according to the dip stick... remember do this with the engine ON that's the most important part of checking trans fluid levels since they work by pressure. If its low and it looks RED ...the fluid is good just need to add some. if the fluid is dark color ( if it's not bright red like blood) then im afraid you might have to go to a transmission shop. NOW if it's red and low go to Auto Zone and have them check the "light" and have them help you find the proper fluid for your specific model and they should help you add the fluid too VERY VERY IMPORTANT to get the right kind of fluid. SECOND VERY IMPORTANT PART..IF your fluid level is GOOD, the color of the fluid is RED (real red like blood nothing else!!!!) no any OTHER SHADE OF RED...RED!!!! ok? and it doesn't drive funny at all keep driving it and just have auto zone check the light ..just to see what its saying that is wrong. dont drive on low fluid.... just straight to autozone or you can damage your transmission.

Radiator... if the light is red, it will be the radiator fluid. All that you should need will be coolant.

It would appear that the transmission is worn out! The transmission fluid is supposed to be red in color with no bad odor about it. When it turns brown & has a burnt smell to it -it means the fluid was low at some point and it got real hot (with an fluid & filter change it could be saved).
When it turns black it means that the fluid now is usually past the saving point as is contaminated with lots of metal filings in it. If you change the fluid & the filter at this point you've got a 50 /50 shot at maybe getting it functioning again -at least for a short while.
I personally would try the fluid & filter change if just to get it running again (although it may have some issues) although the real answer is to start looking for a new vehicle (due to it's age) or have the transmission rebuilt if the car has no other major problems and you think it would be worth it! BTW a rebuilt transmission goes for about $1200 which is probably more than the car is worth.

is it yellow, then it may be your low tire pressure warning
the spare is also monitored, so if all tires are okay then check the spare

If it's round with a line down the middle, then it's a fault in brake system warning. You should check your brake fluid level.
