What is the idling RPM of the engine when this is happening? There are many different types of power steering systems out there these days on vehilcles. It would make it a bit easier if we had a little more information before we give you advice. Year, Make Model, Milage, ect...Any other known issues with vehilce? Yes, the most likely culprit could be the pump because as time goes on the internal pump compoinents start to wear down and the tolerances become to great and at low rmp it cannot keep the proper pressure needed to give adequate power assist to the steering gear. Hope this helps Sincerely' Roger
It sounds like the power steering motor is overheating pre maturely. Changing the motor should take care of the problem. What really happens is the motor reports to the power steering module that it is over heating and the module is shutting power to the motor down, the motor is actually no overheating.
Next time this happens without stopping or pushing gas shift tranny into N and then back into D and see what happens. The battery light came on because of low RPMs, no biggy.
I have a 2006 Accent and also to me sometimes the eps light turn on while I'm driving. I turn off the car and wait few seconds before to turn on again. But how to repair this problem?
This is a known problem with the power steering which will probably
require replacement of the power steering motor. The HHR uses an
electric 12V DC motor to provide the power steering force, and they have
started failing.
GM is recalling the Cobalt and other vehicles for this issue, but not
yet the HHR. If you are out of warranty, you will probably be
personally responsible for the cost of diagnostics and replacement.
You will probably need to contact your dealer unless you are able to
replace the motor yourself. Sorry.
