How to change a 2008 vw beetle headlight bulbs

WAIT UNTIL YOU NEED A BRAKE LITE BULB OR A HEADLIGHT BULB. YOU HAVE TO TAKE THE BUMPERS OFF TO COMPLETE THESE USUALLY SIMPLE TASK. BEETLES ARE A BEAR TO REPAIR.

This is not a fun job. The headlight retention system sometimes becomes locked up due to dust and grime on the mechanism. Even if things are clean, it is VERY difficult. Take my word for it, a VW dealer is the best bet for you. The headlamp mounting system on the Beetle is one of the stupidest setups I've came across in 45 years of fixing VW's. And you can bet VW designed it to force you to go to the dealer.

Removal & Installation

1. Insert a hex wrench into the headlight lock and turn it clockwise 180°.
   
2. Turn the wrench back 90°

Push the retainer tab to remove the headlight—New Beetle


3. Push the retainer tab and remove the headlight assembly. It will unplug from the connector automatically.

4. Installation is the reverse of removal. Insert the assembly carefully to make sure the connector engages properly.

Lift the hood and if equipped remove plastic engine cover. On each headlight you will see plastic retaining latches. releasing these latches will allow the whole headlight assembly to slide out. Its a canister type assembly. You can then access teh bulbs to replace the lights. it reassembles teh same way

the hard part is finding a release clip for the headlight. its usually right on the side of the headlight in the engine compartment in between the barrtey and the headlight. once you release this clip, the whole headlight pops out, the you just replace the bulb and put the headlight right back in and make sure you put the clip back on.

there's a tab on the plastic ring that you need to pop, and then wiggle the whole light assembly out and disconnect the wires

access for the bulbs is a panel you undo at the back of the light assembly, and the low-beam bulb is the first one you encounter when you reach in. (H1 should be the bulb)

putting it back in requires even more wiggling, as you tighten the plastic ring and lock it in place (pay attention that you get the light back in flush to the body work)
