Slack shifter I didn't drive my civic 1991 for a month and now the shifter is slack as hell : when I am geared, the car works fine, but the shifter still move as on neutral (left-right), plus now I got trouble finding the reverse gear, because it is no longer at the end-right, more like half an inch to the left... if someone understands my poor english, thank you
Have you checked the shift cable? The 91 accord and prelude have cables that year, I am guessing that civic does also. Older model honda's have a shift 'rod' system, it is not adjustable, it must be repaired by cleaning, lubricating, and replacement of any worn bushings or seals. The shift cables are adjustable, but there are different ways and measurements between the accord and prelude, and sorry, I don't know what the civic is. If you have a cable system, it could have corrosion which worsened over the one month time it sat unused, and the cable may have frayed or stretched, causing the change in shifting.Have you checked the shift cable? There should be a shift interlock located in front or around the shifter, remove the little plastic cover and try inserting your key to diable the shift lock this is a safety feature that only lets the car go into gear with your foot depressed on the brake, sometimes doing this will enable your to shift the car into gear and reset it, hope this helps.
Set your park break and put the shifter in another gear and put the cover on. There may be a slight curve in the shifter to allow enough room. If everything works without it you can`t be off with the cable.
Keep the hell away from it, many things changed after the first model year which was 91, Spend another 50 bucks and get a 92. Pull up the shifter boot and look at the shift cable ends where they attach to the bottom of the shifter. Most likely the bushings will be broken.
try moving the shifter to first and then second gear, until you get to drive. if one fails to switch then it can be a transmision problem. when that happens also try shutting of the car and restarting it and see if it continues to do the same thing. this might be because the trans is warm and does not shift properly, also the result being you need a knew trasnmision.
find the linkage under the dash. follow it from under the steering column and you should find a loose screw under there.
To be on the safe side, make sure engine is off while you moving the shifter!
Good Luck.
is it a manual or automatic...if its a manual you probably forgot to hook up the shift linkage..if its a manual..you probably didnt put the shifter cable from the shifter on top right, so itll pull the gears when you if in and out on to or back and forth..look and see if the cable has too much slack..that hooks up to the transmission(automatic)....
