2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee, steering noise, restricted lock

I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee, for the last few weeks the steering has been making a tremendous 'knocking' noise with a slight vibration through the steering wheel, all upon turning left, generally at slow speeds, corners, manouvres etc. It also restricts the 'lock' amount as well. This doesn't always happen though which also brings into play the intermitent problems scenario. There are no such problems to the right ?
My superb mechanic is a bit stumped, can you help ?

Many thanks,

Roger (07957 123333)

    Hi,

It's difficult to tell as I am slightly deaf !! I don't think there is any 'whirring' noise though, also since I posted this the reduced steering lock is getting worse, any ideas ??

    Many thanks,

    Rog

sounds like a loose wheel or more likey a bad wheel bearing. does it make a louder "whirring" noise with increased speed?

My 2001 jeep was doing that recently. Have you checked the steering fluid. If low need to fill, then turn on car and turn the steering wheel to get fluid going through lines. Also check the input and output lines make sure they don't have a hole or crack. In which my input line had a hole and was able to replace, refill fluid working just fine.

Check the steering rack.

Check the power steering pump.

Check the Tye rods.

And your left Struts.

That will do it.

Rate this too.

1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee squeaking and power steering

It very well could be the pawer steering pump. But to isolate the squeking sound, take that can of wd-40 and find the idler pully and tensior pully. Spray the bearing area of both pulleys. If your bearing in those pulleys are going bad then it will make that noise. If the wd-40 quits the noise at one of those tow pulleys then you know which one to replace. If its does not, then start looking to replace the powersteering pump. I take it you have checked the power steering fluid levels and they are ok?? Also, you stated that the noise started after you bought the alternator, then try a new alternator. It might of just been a faulty alternator. Happens all the time. One last inexpensive tip is replacing all belts with new. Belts get glazed over and dirty and cause noise too. One last question. Did you make sure the belts were tight enough? Just a little variance in the belt tension can make the difference.

How often should you replace ingtion coil on 2001 jeep grand cherokee

Replace it when it gives weaker than normal spark, or no spark (only determined by actual testing of trigger components as well.) How long do they last? Should last more than a few years, have had some last 300K without failing.

I have a 2005 jeep grand Cherokee and when i turn the steering wheel it makes a clicking noise i believe it may be the turn signal stick that is rubbing up against the steering, also when i lock and unlock...

The clicking noise is coming from the clock spring in the steering column. The clock spring is the connection between the air bag and lower harness. It should be replaced by a certified technician.
