- The mass air sensor has to do with fuel mixture adjustment for altitude changes. Does the Haynes manual have troubleshooting routines for the cooling system. Turn on the A/C system to get the fans running and see if the engine now runs cooler. If it does, make sure that you bought the right thermal sensor. Try one from a VW dealer. There is a remote possibility that the thermal sensor input circuit in the computer is faulty, but I would expect that the check engine light would be on to say so in a specific code.
