Ok the security light is on because it isn't reading the chip pellet in the key. The problem with the is usually either bad key, bad pickup in the cylinder, or bad paskey unit. if it is the key or the cylinder then you can bypass the unit by adding a resistor to match the key resistance and attach it to the violet and white wires at the bottom of the column. I do alot of bypasses on these passkey units, it works wonderful.

Your stalling however sounds like a different problem.. since the security system only disables the starting feature and not the running of the vehicle. But with the 3800 engine the cranshaft sensor or sensor wiring, as the engine gets hot causes shorting to the computer and shuts engine down. I would look into that to solve your problems.

Testimonial: "Thanks! I have had the crank sensor replaced twice in the past 2 months, the new one just last wk.Also cam sensor, coils, wires and plugs. AArrg!"

Is it the check engine light? You need to have the code(s) read out and pursued to repairs. Try changing out the fuel filter first. The fuel pump may also be near life end.

Testimonial: "Thanks! No engine light or stored codes. Fuel pump is running when key is turned. I'll change the filter today. Much appreciated!!"

Voltage regulator

Sounds like a bad connection. The alternator only charges the battery, so if it or the voltage regulator in the alternator fails, the battery would slowly run down, not die all at once.

1998 buick lesabre wont start security light flashing

The security light is a visual indication that something in the car's antitheft system is failing. In most GM cars and trucks there is a hidden system that most people are unaware even exists. From the moment you put your key in the ignition, there begins a constant line of communication between your key's security chip or transponder, to the ignition's lock cylinder, and then to the car's TDM. These 3 parts are in CONSTANT communication. If the key is in the ignition, these parts are sending signals to each other. The security light illuminates when that signal gets broken, even just for a second. When the signal breaks, the car goes into antitheft mode. The car thinks its being stolen or hotwired because it is not getting that signal from YOUR specific key. There is where the security light turns on and shuts down your vehicle.

My dad has a 1997 buick lesabre 3.8 that will not start when he drives somewhere and shuts the car off. he has to wait 15 or twenty minutes before it will start. it only does this in the summertime not...

When this happens, look around the dash area for a light that says SECURITY. If you see this light, then it means you are having PASSLOCK security issues. This will cause the car to not start. This link has tons of info and DO IT YOURSELF solutions to passlock problems.

Exact same problem that I had on mine. The typical resistor trick was useless. Here is the only thing that saved it from the junkyard: http://newrockies.ca/vatsbypass

1997 Buick Le Sabre will not start somtimes

My wife has a 96 we had a similar problem. I believe that the connectors on the chip that is in the ignition key are worn out. The manual said that it is a safety feature on the car if someone tries to use a different key in the ignition or tries to punch it, it disables the car for like 3 minutes. We had a spare ignition key and switched to that and haven't had the problem since. Hope that solves your problem.
