Defrost is the default position, The control head is most likely electronic on this model, the actuators that switch the modes are little electric motors. There was an issue with the plastic doors that direct airflow, they would break and jamb. If the control head were to be the older style that uses vacuum then I would say that you have lost vacuum to the inside of the vehicle. If this is the case look for a broken vacuum hose coming to or through the firewall, ususlly on the passenger side under the hood close to the HVAC pipes/lines in the firewall.
I had the same problem with my 2002 Ford Explorer. It was a simple fix. There are two vacuum lines comming out of the fire wall on the left side ( looking towards the windshield) near the ac pipes. One vacuum line is gray and hooks up to a diaphram on the left side of the engine. The other is a black vacuum line that goes behind the engine. The black line was melted from being to close to a manifold or valve cover. I hope your was as easy as mine.
