The steerin wheel screws have come loose inside the steering colum, if you can move the steering wheel up and down and back and forth you will have to remove the air bag the horn and horn button and tighten the two screws that are tork heads #8 to fix this issue.

  • Anonymous Aug 20, 2009

If you want to fix this yourself you can do this it takes two to three hours with out the right tools, If you rent the tools to remove the steering wheel and the u clamp to remove the snap ring it will cost you almost nothing and would take an hour. You can rent it from schucks or autozone, you need steering wheel puller and screw on u clamp to remove plastic cover to ge tto the screws, I am also assumeing it is a tilt wheel. Disconnect the battery pull two bolt air bag retainer covers remove two bolts holding air bag on, next disconnect the air bag, Next remove 3 philips screws holding the horn assembly plastic and metal ring, Put tothe side in order how the screws and two parts go, if there are wires for a cruise control disconnect them. Next Remove 3/4 inch center steering nut, install U bolt on the bolt thread that you removed the nut off of screw down till the plastic cap is 1/4 inch down allowing you to getto the center snap ring, using too picks work snap ring out of the grouve then remove the u clamp. once you pull the clap off the plastic plate whell come off and the plate is keyed to go on one way. after you remove plastic cover you will see three screws tork head type #8 or #6 buy a tube ot thread lock #605 remove the screws and put a drop on each screw then screw down. once screws are tight make sure the steering ball is not broke it is a plastic ball with a notch on one end with a spring on the other. Connect the battery up, install key and turn the key on put foot on brake then shif the shifter selecter back and forth if it operates somothly your done, if it gives you trouble still then check the pin in the pivot point on the shift lever, if it looks broke hammer it out and take to the parts store get new roll pin and hammer new one pack in with a center hole punch. then reinstall the parts. If you run into trouble you can post here and I can help you more.

Thanks for using fixya and have a good day!

The charge depends on what part is faulty.

The first thing to do is replacing the transmission fluid.

If that does not fix the problem, an auto transmission, the next step is testing and eventually replace solenoid pack located underneath transmission.

Then , depending on the problem, there are a couple of extra parts to be tested. One of the parts is the transmission control module attached to transmission.

In some case the transmission box is gone, in that case the transmission must be replaced or rebuilt, and the repair is very expensive.

The cost depends on what part is faulty.

If you just needed transmission fluid and testing, then you can get away with $100.
To replace solenoid pack you may spend several hundreds.
If the TCM (transmission control module) must be replaced, cost will probably be over $500.
If you are in the extrme case when the transmission box must be replaced, there the cost will be very expensive. A new transmission box usually is above $.1500, plus labor.

99 malibu, key won't turn in ignition (it's new cylinder and casing that worked fine before I changed gear shift back to park and connected the battery)

Shake ya sterring wheel from side to side and try turning ya key. The lock could be stuck and needs to be freed up. This should do the trick.

I have a 99 Suburban. Sterring wheel is locked and will not unlock to turn key.

Some times just putting pressure on the steering wheel either left or right turnwill allow the key to be turned. What happens is corrosion sets up and does not allow the steering wheel to turn completely to its index position. Just jiggling it back an forth will allow it to index. After you get it to turn properly, squirt a little WD-40 into the key hole and work the steering back and forth while turning the key.

Having trouble shifting from park to any gear, when I wait about 15 secs it may shift easily and other times I turn the wheel and it will shift

Do not shift into park and move the steering wheel to lock it. It will lock itself if the vehicle is moved or someone tries to steel it. Reason is that the lock pin hsas many holes to drop into and if you lock it when you have turning pressure on in it. You will lock it with pressure on the lock pin.
Second, always set your parking brake before, not after putting it in park. Never put your front tires against a curb and put it in park without letting the vehile roll away from the curb.. An don't hang you car on a slope by putting it in park. Parking brake always befor parking gear and hands off steering wheel when placing in park. Try it, you'll like it.. forcing your shifter to come out of park can cause damage to the shifting componants. Let me know how it works for you. - Ned_

99 Suburban steering box???

Check your collapsible steering column. They are a two piece design and one collapses inside the other on inpact so the driver will not be inpaled on the steering shaft.. When they are loose it creates play in the steering wheel. I think GM may have a service bulletin on it but I am not sure.
If no trouble found it may be the valve in the steering box.

1997 diesel suburban steering goes left

I doubt it's your 4x4. Most transfer case will start turning the front driveshaft, meaning that BOTH front wheels would try to turn.

Could be a brake pad/caliper locking up on your left wheel. That'll make that wheel turn slower resulting in the veering left.

Could also be a wheel bearing. However usually you'll hear a grinding noise to go along with that. And it'll pull rather consistently in that direction rather than suddenly.

Or, what first comes to mind is that your steering box is loose, or the gear inside the steering box is stripped in one spot. Or your front tie rods could be shifting or possibly ball joints. These would cause a sudden shifting/veering.

All of these things are front end related. And also very dangerous. Take it down to any alignment shop, have them put it on a lift, and diagnose immediately.

Worse case scenerio is that a front end part breaks and sends you out of control and into someone else. Please get it checked. A diesel Suburban could do a lot of damage.
