Motor will not crank. Battery good. Jump accross solinoid & starter and starts for 3 seconds and then dies. Fuel pump working.

  • Anonymous Aug 17, 2009

Car sat for 3 weeks. Started right up and moved out of the driveway. 2 hours later, won't crank. It's the starting and dieing that is getting me. Acts like the VATS chip is wrong (tried 2 sets of keys) but that doesn't make them not crank. Just crank and not start. Thought it might be a nuetral safety switch but can't find it, but that shouldn't make it die.

It could also be the VATS system faulty. The Theft Deterrent Module (TDM) also controls the starter relay, so if the TDM is faulty it could definitely be that your car is not cranking.

Check your ignition switch contacts...might also be an electrical bad connection somewhere. Also check the fuses. Check also the voltage going the solenoid or test the solenoid too.

How to diagnois problem with no scanner

Eliminate the battery as the issue first up.
Check if you can jump start the car from another vehicle with its engine running or at least have the starter motor kick over the engine. If it starts then you know your battery is the issue. Having lights does not mean the battery has enough cold cranking amps to turn over the starter motor.

2. If the starter cranks the engine over as normal with a jump start from another car but your engine does not start you have also eliminated the starter motor as the issue.

3. If it does not start and the starter motor will not crank the engine over either when you jump start from another vehicle, then there may well be a problem with the starter solenoid, the starter motor itself or with the wiring to the starter solenoid or to the starter motor. No power getting to the starter motor solenoid or to the starter motor and obviously the starter motor will not turn over.

4. So I need not write much more here, there is a very good guide to solving starting issues here which I suggest you might like to read.

Won't start, won't crank

have you crossed the solenoid terminals and checked the starter for operation? may have the battery cable burnt thru to ground by the exhaust side of the motor..it happens if the cable is up against the block..

Fuel relay

Short answer, your batter is bad. or is disCHARGED:
Long.:

wont crank?
no engine, cranks ,unless the starting system works.
unless pushed fast, like my car or i park on a hill and coast jump my car.(M/T tranny rule)

NO crank, is the true failure here:
slow Cranks are , bad battery , or a discharged battery , due to bad charging system or parked for 3 months or longer.

so ill assume its NO CRANK.
I turn the key TO START and the starter fails to CRANK.
the starter motor is dead. (key clue 1)
so i attach a set of jumper cables to my Caddy, running and this car
now cranks and RUNS (you left that out. above, huh? runs)

turnsover means nothing, because the engine starter turns over
and the engine can turn over and the engine can run,
once running the EFI system SUSTAINS runninng.
so there are 4 states there. (4 phases )

No cranks #1 reason to be slow , are a bad battery
so I charge that battery, and see how if it cranks , now?
it dont crank means a bad battery
it does work( crank) see how long it works.../?
if it dies again, or better, check the cars Alternator for by measuring
accross the battery terminals running , with any volt meter.
13.3 to 15vdc is a good alternator running the engine.
if NOT, the charge system is bad. (system)

On some cars the IMMO can block Cranking or for sure blocks
fueling after 2 seconds. So. watch the IMMO light on the dash.
Immo is the Immoblizer. option.

Wont start turn over with key but can jump accross starter

solinoid for starter is bad. on a lot of fords the solinoid is mounted on fender, under hood. if you jump from one side to other on solinoid, and it tries to start then solinoid is toast. just follow the positive cable from battery. and you will find it.

I tried to start my 94Sunbird-I heard clicking for a few seconds & then nothing. Battery is good & it couldn't be jump started. How can I find out if it's the starter or something else? help?

one easy way is to have someone hold key in crank ing position, then another person needs to hit or tap the starer housing itself.if engine begins to crank intermittently or ur cliking noise turns into small jolts of the starter trying to crank then u can bet its the strtr motor. u do need a charged batt for this test. also chek ur battery grounds they can dramatically affect starter operation if we have a voltage drop anywhere in starter circuit .chek batt cables r tight on batt posts, loose batt cables on battery will also give u clicking noise w no starter operation

Car just clicks when tryingto start battery is good. Will not jump with another car

YOU HAVE A PROBLEM LIKE A LOT OF OTHERS BUT ITS EITHER,
the battery term on the = or+ on battery lead OR where the Earth lead on battery is fitted ORthe feed (+)on starter motor connection or the solinoid on starter,or starter jamed or engine siezed.
SO first jump start as +on battery on both cars and them (black lead)to a good earth on engine not on to battery on your engine, try to start if not fot red lead to starter motor feed and it should spin if not then replace the starter but first just turn engine over slightly by bottom pully,if it dosent turn then engine is no good.

The acr would not start. Battery works. I banged

If you banged on the starter motor and it started then you have a stickie bendix drive and solinoid sticking
But if you have to also jump start it as well then do this.....When it wont start before doing anything else turn on the lights and hit the starter and if the lights go dim or go out the battery is no good or you have a short in the eletc ...so take battery lead off for 2 days and if starts you have a SHORTin the eletrics

Starts at times but not at others. maybe a theft deterent problem?I it started like 8 times consecutively and now all electrical works but no crank or anything.

Try this keep your headlights on and crank starter. Do lights go out?Dash too? If your battery is fully charged it is most likely your srarter motor ,if clicking then selonoid. A starter is a motor with brushes that wear out just like any motor.Try to see if a jump start cranks the motor,if so then your battery doesn't have enough cranking amps to start. Also clean battery posts cables make sure all are tight including grounds.Good luck.
