Speedometer on Audi

Sounds like the wiring harness was damaged or left disconnected when the engine was installed.

I have a audi 500se the cluster goes on but doesn't gauge at all or show signs... If any anyone can tell me where to check pls

chech ur fuses or the flasher fuse block

on the gearbox....i guess, while removing the starter, u might have jammed the wiring to the speedo and fuel gauge....its on the same bunch...have that checked first

This is due to a problem with the gears in the speedometer and fuel gauge; there was a manufacturing defect that ford fixed in later years. The cheapest solution is to replace these gauges. I found a local mechanic that knew how to fix it, and did the job for $60. I recommend checking craigslist for a local person, because this is a very common problem.

fuel gauge don't work sound like the fuel sending sensor is bad ,and the speedometer check your fuses under hood ,also check that the speedometer cable is not loose from transmission

Have the speed sensor checked, that's mounted on the side of the tranny, that operates the speedometer. As far as the fuel gauge, probably the fuel sending unit is shot which is in the gas tank.

I had similar problems with speedos in two 1990 Audi 100s, it was some time ago, but the contacts on the circuit boards on the back of the speedo deteriorate and do not give a good contact. I bought second hand speedos, only to find they had similar problems, eventually it was very easy to fix, I shaved matchsticks to chisel points and pushed them into the circuit boards to add pressure on the contacts and improve connection. After that repair drove the cars for a few years and the problem did not recur. It was a long time ago and I cannot remember exactly where the matchsticks were placed but look for soldered points near the edges of the boards. Regards, Michael
