Highlander. My wife backed into a tree and broke the taillight. I bought the new assembly from Toyota i'm just not sure what all is involved.

Actually, you need to remove the bumper cover as solution 2 says, then there is one screw there that you take out. but then there are 2 nuts that you have to access from inside - which they want you to take the whole interior of the truck apart to access. i have the same issue, except it was my husband who backed into our minivan,and i'm not sure what i'm going to do. if you take off the access panel, you'll see that it looks like you could almost get those nuts off if you had the right tool - a very narrow long socket and socket extender to fit in the access holes. i'll let you know if i'm able to do it or not.
Remove all the clips and bolts from the rear wheelwells. Remove all of the trunk interior floor and around the rear hatch. Keep removing every bolt on the rear end that points towards the bumper. Then the rear bumper should come off, then there is 2 or 3 screws holding the tail light in from under the bumper cover!

Open back hatch and remove srews and the assembly should come loose
