Problem for Nissan 2002 Altima

Nizzan 02 Black smoke coming out tailpipe and consumption of oil

By gabrielp08 on Aug 13, 2009

" "
My car is nizzan altima 2002 2.5 engine. I found out that the black smoke is coming out of exhaust tailpipe for a long time now. Also it burns oil like crazy. Often and often I refill oil every week as the engine oil never last more than 5 days. Although the car is running. Should I get the engine rebuilt? or buy a reconditioned engine since everybody is complaing about this problem?

Thanks for your advise and solution to solve this problem.

Black smoke is caused by excess fuel that has entered the cylinder area and cannot be burned completely. Poor fuel mileage is also a common complaint when black smoke comes out of the tailpipe. Black smoke out the tailpipe is the least cause for alarm. Excess fuel will usually effect engine performance, reduce fuel economy, and produce a fuel odor. Some of the causes of excess fuel are a carburetor that is out of adjustment, a faulty fuel pump, a leaky fuel injector, or a faulty engine computer or computer sensor. If black smoke is present, check the engine oil to make sure excess fuel has not contaminated it. Do not start the engine if a heavy, raw fuel smell can be detected in the engine oil.

after my 110,000 miles my (service engine soon) light turn on and black smoke started coming out of my tail pipe. I took it to Nissan and they told me i had to change my catalitic converter and all my exhaust sytem, resulting in a total of $1500 expence. I went to my mechanic and he told me it was worst, the catalitic converter was bad and my egine was burning oil from inside my pistons and if i had an extended waranty !!thank god i bought it" to call them and they were going to take it to their mechanics. so there it was, my motor had to be changed. they changed everything exept the catalitic converter since its not mechanical but normal wear and tear, i told my mechanic to change it for me and he changed it for 1,000 with all new sensors too. thats just one of my expences in nissan altima. PS my first car ever, and had a bad experience already, pss my dad had a 4x4 nissan truck never gave him any trouble, what ever happend to the good old reliable nissans?

Your pre-cat is disintegrated and ingested by the engine (overlap valve in CVTC). You need new engine and new pre-catalytic converter. It is wellknown problem on 02-03 altima
