Sorry about you problem as your not the only one. With the electrical connecter remover from the switch spraying carb cleaner into the plug and around the switch and blasting off with compressed are works good and quick. Trying to get the oil out of the switch is another matter as the contacs burn in the swich with the added fuel of the oil or the cleaner. The burnt contacts don't survive and the switch has to be replaced and the oil leak fixed

Some additions to DayLongDrives excellent response.

Starting Ether works well too. When using either of them, remember they are Highly Flammable. Take proper precautions. Removing the negative battery terminal should do it.

Both evaporate rather quickly, so there is no need for worry in the long term.

Where proper eye protection when using compressed air and the solvents. You'll be great.

@DayLong - This kept showing in my box. Didn't mean to step on toes. Gave you a helpful.

Can you use a 95 GMC 1500 V6 automatic transmission to replace in a 89 K 1500 V8 4x4?

The 95 GMC 1500 V6 automatic transmission may not be compatible with the 89 K1500 V8 4x4 due to differences in engine size and drivetrain. It's recommended to use a transmission that matches the engine and drivetrain specifications of your 89 K1500.

Cannot locate data link connector

If you're looking for the OBD 2 port for your scanner - there isn't one. OBD 2 scanners / code readers only work/are used by 1996 and newer vehicles. I also have a 95 JGC and I have to resort to the "lamp flash" method to get the trouble codes from the ECU.

Recently had a blow-by issue on my 95 JGC....with oil spouting from the dipstick tube!Of course, this ran along the length of the underside of the vehicle! My issue now.....the vehicle will NOT shoft into...

Oil generally will not cause a short but can break an electrical connection. Make sure all harnesses are clean at the connectors (inside and out) I believe your reverse switch is on the right side of your transmission . If oil soaked, its possible it may be malfunctioning. Check the plug connectors and if necessary replace it or carefully take it apart and clean it. (pieces can fall out so be really careful with this.) Make sure the light sockets are properly grounded and that if you had the engine out, you have not cut or pinched a wire between it and the bellhousing.

Automatic transmission is stuck in 2nd gear (limp mode)

most newer vehicles  have transmission control modules, that go to a default of 2nd or 3rd gear when they go bad!  I had a 91 plymouth stuck in 3rd gear because of this module! could be your problem!    when mine went out, it smelled like something electrical burned inside the the passenger cabin! I would check all the electrical connections on the transmission first    good luck
