Have a 94 New Yorker when I put it in reverse I get a red R on the PRNDL and don't have reverse all other gears are green and work. What might be causing this?

SO REV IS DRIVE. WELL FIRST MAKES SURE THE SHIFT LINKAGE IS NOT FAILING,
R MUST GO TO R ON THE BOX SIDE.
ATF FLUID LEVELS GOOD IN PARK AND HOT.

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO GET 1994, TCM FAULT CODES VIA SERVICE MANUAL STEPS>
THE BOX HAS AND ELECTRONIC GOVERNOR
IF BAD WILL NOT UPSHIFT IN DRIVE OR LIMITED.
makes sure to first set the shift cable adjustments so that all PRNDL detents in the box match up to lever in side car shifter. the service manual cover all that.
then this box has 4 pump pressure port that we use a 300psi gauge on to make sure pressures are good in REVERSE.
inside the box the REAR servo and and front clutch are both engaged if not reverse fails for sure pressures pressures wrong seen at black lines in my drawing below.,.

if the shifter manual valve below is mal-adjusted
reverse fails hard and is the most simple thing to work in this box SEE? if cable not adjusted, the valve is now offset and leaks and the black path here is dead.

scan the PCM (the PCM has TCM) the TCM tranny brain and if TCM is not happy it tells you why
so all carsChev 1992+ must be scanned, first.
the 4t60E box is electronic shifted. scan it.
what is miles on car.? 100k,300Kwhat?

causes are vast, (ever see inside any A/T box)
the next test in the book is pump pressure test

Check fuses
scan the PCM/TCM for tranny errors DTC's codes.
do the pump pressure test the service manual.

seems like car has 2 problems
but you never said car runs good
engine starts and runs and stays running,
nor if all gears in the box are good or bad
or if Reverse gear is dead, (means car does not move)
nobody on earth can guess what any car owner can do.
ever. we can tell you what a real shop will do ,never you.
you have no parts,skills,tools ,meters or the service manual
so what can you with empty hands, IDK> shrug.

my guess wild is REVERSE gear is dead, and drive works.

but if you switch the gear shift to R (PRNDL)
and car does not move foot on gas (throttle)
the transmission is failing
only why remains. that takes tools and tests you do not have
or scan the PCM but no scanner in hand. buy /rent barrowed)
the PRNDL switch may show errors
or shift solenoid errors.

or RPM cold is too high 1500RPM cold is par. 800hot.
if too high RPM the car creeps i gear. (first car ever?)
but all drivers put foot on the brake first to shift into gears
or run over the kids, I'm told.

take it to a shop and ask.

Bad neutral switch on the trasmission

Check the transmission fluid level ,start engine and put in reverse with the handbrake on and chocks behind the wheels ,or someone sitting inside car with foot brake ******* and see what its like ,why refit another autobox when you could have fitted a manual instead and got a better fuel economy

Nuetral safty switch or shift position sensor is faulty needs to be replaced.

Remove the center console.
There will be a bulb underneath the PRNDL(Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, Low) - quarter turn to the left. Pull bulb down; put new bulb in - put back in hole quarter turn to right - reinstall center console...

i had the same problem like drushlow in my Eagle Vision, wich has the same engine and transmission. Your transmission is going into safety mode wich allows you to go on but just in 2nd gear. The Problem in my car was the EGR Valve. In other words the engine had a problem and the transmission swiched into safety mode to make sure the engine don´t get any more damage. So i´m very sure your transmission is still OK but there is only one way to find out what is wrong. Drive to a chrysler dealer and read the errror code (that only cost you 20 to 40 dollars). After that you know what´s wrong and can decide what you wanna do.
