I have a 1997 Honda Civic DX with a manual transmission. It has a little over 200K miles on it and I put on about 3,000 more miles per month. For the past six months or so my transmission has started getting stuck in 5th gear. I have learned a few tricks to get it out while driving because after the first couple of times of having to start in 5th from a dead stop and being afraid that I was going to burn out my clutch, I really needed some alternatives. I have found that if I am going around 60+ mph I can (usually) get it out of 5th gear with it only sticking a little bit, but if I slow down before getting it out of gear then it becomes A LOT harder to get it out. Also, sometimes if it gets stuck really bad and is impossible to pull out, if I try speeding up again and try pulling it out after that it will work. Twice my boyfriend was messing with it while the car was parked to try to figure out what was wrong and when he put it in 5th gear it got stuck so bad that when we tried to pull on the gear shifter it looked like it was bending the shifter before even beginning to come out of gear. Finally, we got it out of gear by pushing the car and once it moved a little bit it fell out of gear. Occasionally, it will not go all of the way into 5th gear and will fall out while I am driving down the highway, but usually I can feel when it doesn't go in all of the ways and if I take it back out and try a few times it will go in (and get stuck). I can drive my car just fine since I have found out that if I let it out of 5th while still moving fast and just roll to a stop it usually will come out, but it is a problem that I am wanting to fix as soon as possible. I had a friend tell me that it might be the D-tent (sp??), but if there is any way that I wouldn't have to re-build the transmission, I would love to try it! If you have any ideas, please help! Thank you so much and God Bless! :)

Hi my name is mike ,if it only happens in 5th gear it is more than likely the syncro gear that is causing this the sycro gear is on all the gears and allows the gears to mesh together easily when you shift into gear ,usually it give people the problem when the car has alot of miles onit and its mostly when you try to shift into that gear it will be hard to go in or not go in all the way and then fall out of gear ,this one sounds like it may have rough spots on the syncro and it holds it on gear, it comes out of gear when you speed up and let off because when you speed up then let off it takes some of the pressure off the gear and then it will release ,hope this helps ,most likely you will have to put another transmission in .let me know if you have any Q's
