I wrote in yesterday about my 1995 Volvo 850 (approx 160,000 miles) with leaking valves that will required about $1200 more in work. I appreciate the good responses I've received. One more question: Yesterday, the mechanic at the Volvo dealership (where we have all repairs done) said we might expect to get up to 250,000 miles on this car. Our average cost in service per year over the past 3 years has been around $1200. We have kept up with regular maintenance over the years. Anybody our there think we could get over 200,000 miles on this car? The car still looks pretty good. I'm not in love with it but we're trying to avoid a car pmt for the next year or so. Thanks in advance.
I assume you had a smoking exhaust problem and other engine hiccups that led you to your mechanic. Your mechanic should have done a compression check and vaccum test and fluctuations in these gauge readings usually indicates bad valves or rings. If your car is a turbo like mine then you may just need a turbo rebuild as the turbo oil seals waer and can leak hot oil back into the intake side of the engine and also cause blue smoke to discharge out the exhaust. That is easier to fix than the valve job but both would be adivsed at 160k. Good luck !
You should be able to get well over 200,000 miles easily in that car. Obviously all cars are unique, but as a rule of thumb Volvo makes an extremely safe and long lasting car. I would think that you could get 250,000 miles with no problem on that car if you continue with your regular maintenance. Let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks for using FixYa!
yes I do believe you can easily get 200k out of her. I have seen a few volvo's with over 250k on them. As long as maintenance is kept up, she'll keep purring
If maintenance is kept up on this car 200,000 miles will not be a problem. It isn;t uncommon to see these models rack up 400,000 to 500,000 miles. There is one floating around the internet that claims 1.5 million miles and still going strong.
