Check small wire at starter solenoid on the starter. Could be loose, could be corroded

If the security system isn't flashing, check your engine start relay in the engine bay, might also want to tap the starter as it could be fried too.

Little red light on top of the instrument panel flashing fast while trying to start the vehicle ? Anti-theft system disables the starter if there is a problem .

Thanks for the reply. The PATS ring is around the ignition switch, but is not plugged in. Ranger had been rebuilt for off-road when son purchased. No changes since then. Started and drove until parked. Wouldn't the anti-theft had prevented that if that were to be the problem? I am trying to help him get it started as he is home on leave and so wanted to head out through the desert.

Also, would shorting the starter work even with PATS?

the anti theft would keep the the stater from engaging an cranking the engine.

    What engine does it have

  • Jeff Armer
    Jeff Armer Mar 16, 2019

No . shorting the start with pats wouldn't do anything. The PCM - engine would enable the fuel injectors , software programmed into the pcm won't let it happen if it doesn't the correct code's the BCM etc....

SOURCE: starter relay clicks when you turn ignition key on

I would think bad starter. Remove it and have it tested to find out. It could also be the starter solenoid gone bad.

SOURCE: 2004 Toyota Sequoia, interior lights bright,

You operative panel, Click on starter means all seem ok! more likely problem is with the starter itself! cause the click you hear is comming out of the starter actuator BUT you have a weared contact carbons of the starter.... of course, this should be done by a technician
Contact carbons are very cheap (should not exceed $3 - $4)! but labor might cost something
good luck

SOURCE: cars security light came on

Usually the security light means it can't read the chip in the key.. the little black chip at the base of the key.
Try using a spare key

Was driving 2002 ford ranger when engine died, lights work,no clicking from starter, could it be the clutch sensor?

The clutch sensor would not cause the dying problem. If you have dash lights that is not an indication that the battery is ok sine they require almost no voltage to turn on. Try your headlights with the key on and see if the dash light dim. This would indicate a battery/charging system problem. Also note if the battery light comes on when the key is turned on. If the other lights work but the battery light does not it indicates the alternator has a problem. If all the lights work fine check for power at the clutch switch which contacts the cluths pedal arm higher up the pedal. Should have power to and thru the switch when cranking.

Startproblem with my citroen c4

could be several things, I would check battery terminal connections make sure they are tight and clean. how old is battery? could need replaced. if jump starting works I would suspect battery, once running is alternator charging? turn head lights on before trying to start, are they bright? leave them on and watch them while someone trys to start car, do they dim or stay bright? if the dim quckly with click that your hearing you may need a starter, if they stay bright, most likey a battery or bad terminal connections.

Car will not crank and the timing chain is fine

Well, that's good, but even if the chain was broke, the starter would still be tryiing to start the car. Since your starter wont crank the engine over, your start circuit has a malfunction. Possibly the starter went out, so you need to have that tested for a malfunction. A simple test of part of the circuit is to turn the key to on.. Now your dash warnimg lights (oil, alternator, and check engine light) should be on. Are they on, and your gauges working? If not you have lost power to the ignition switch, so check your battery connections. If the key switch turns the dash on, then turn key to start. Do you hear a click from the engine area? If not, have the starter checked. If you do hear a click, or several clicks, then power from the switch is causing that click, probably at the starter. Turn the headlights on and observe them. Are they bright? If not, charge the battery up. If they are bright, watch them while a helper turns the key to start. If the lights go dim in start, probably a bad starter. If the lights don't dim, it could be a bad connection somewhere, like the battery or starter. Good luck

1995 t-bird v8. Starter will not crank, clicking noise coming from possible relay behind right headlamp. Battery is good and lights are bright no dimming when key is turned

The Ford V-8 they use in both Crown Vic and T-Bird are good for losing the solenoid to the starter. Replace that first before looking for a new starter.

what lights? headlights? dash lights? I would check the connections. If its the starter usually you will hear a heavy "click" when you turn the key.

Won't start lights dim and then brighten

Did you try to boost battery? Sounds like low charge. Check battery terminals for tight and clean as well as groung connection at body and power connection at starter for clean. If battery OK test for power on starter wires. Large wire will have contant battery power small wire will have battery power when key is in crank position. If power ok on both it will probably need a starter. Hope this helps...Good Luck.
