Like most late model Chrysler products this car doesn't have an external "IN LINE" fuel filter, the filter is a very fine mess Nylon sock that goes over the inlet of the fuel pump inside the fuel tank, it is never serviced unless the fuel pump is replaced. This has been the norm since the late 90's. You can buy the strainer separately if you still desire to replace it. See picture below and part number. AIRTEX Part # FS217 Fuel Strainer $5.47 USD
Lotta things - first things to check are tune-up items: spark plugs, spark plug wires, air filter, rebreather filter, oil filter, fuel filter, in-tank fuel strainer, ignition control module/distributor cap/rotor, PCV valve
Most probable cause: lack of spark from the ignition system 2nd most probable cause: engine starved for fuel due to fuel system problem: fuel filter, fuel pump, in-tank fuel pump or clogged in-tank fuel strainer.

(actually, all models from 1999-2003 including the DX, LX, ES, Mazdaspeed, and Protege 5)
does not have an inline fuel filter. The only fuel filter it has is a "strainer"
or a "screen", which looks like a nylon mesh "sock". This strainer is
connected to the fuel pump, located in the gas tank. Although this fuel
strainer does not require periodic replacement, it is recommended that
it be changed if you are replacing the fuel pump.
Hello I'm an M.B. tech.. It sounds like the fuel strainer is clogged. It is a very common problem on M.B. diesel engines of that era. Diesel fuel develops algea inside the fuel tank and after a period of time it clos the strainer. The strainer is at the bottom of the fuel tank where the big fuel hose attatches to the tank. The hose unscrews frome the strainer and then the strainer unscrews from the tank. There is a filter on the strainer that can be cleaned and reinstalled. In the engine compartment there is a small primer pump that is by the fuel rack inline with the feed hose from the tank. If you turn the knob(clear or white plastic) on the pump it will retract allowing you to use it as a hand pump. If when attempting to retract hand pump it is sucked back down and will not stay retracted that means you have a restriction in the line- your fuel strainer is clogged is the most likley problem. replace both fuel filters during repair for best results.
