I've had to occasionally put the charger on my 2001 Maxima starting about January (it's now August). In the last 3 weeks it has gone from maybe once a month to twice a week. My voltages read good but I don't know how/where to hookup my alternator checking shunt of my analyzer to check the amps. Halp!

Oldpglyr, In my opinion shunt "load" meters are hard on batteries and I've built them. If your car is charging the battery between 13.5 volts to 15.0 volts then your charging system is good. You already know it's the battery, what are you waiting for, to get stranded? Get that baby replaced while your in control of when it happens. Dale

Failure to start. then will start next day. Mazda said it was fuel pump. They replaced $790.00. did not resolve problem. they kept 2 days and said it was battery. Replaced. @ weeks later same problem.

Well, they probably did put on either a bad fuel pump or should've done the relay. There is also a fuel pump REGULATOR that can cause a lot of trouble. Make them keep at it,since their work should be warranteed when they say they've fixed it. don-ohio

2001 nissan maxima code po505 idle speed when the car is cold no start

To fix this problem you will need to replace the ecm and the ISC valve. DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT REPLACE JUST ONE OR THE OTHER. otherwise you will be putting both parts in again. the ISC (Idle Speed Conrol Valve) Gets antifrezze in it and it shorts the circuit inside and going back to the ECM. Once shorted there is no way of fixing the circuit without replacing both. U have gone through this problem many times brefore.

Hi, an intermittent blower can be caused by either the switch or the motor itself. To find which it is, try messing with the switch to see if it will misbehave. If not, then the next time it doesn't work, try hitting the motor. Unfortunately your blower is behind the glove box, but maybe you can just pull the glove box past its stops and reach back to hit the motor with your fist. It hitting it makes it start, the motor has a dead spot on the commutator and should be replaced. Please let me know if you have any questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

Slow charge the battery up for 3 days on a trickle charge and see if it still does it.

If it does, maybe a new battery is in order.

Batteries last only 3 years on average.

Good luck.

How do I check alternator amperage on a 2001 maxima?

  1. Check the gauges, if the car is equipped with them. If you have a volt/amp gauge, it will read the alternator output for you. Turn on the blower fan for the AC or Heater, the headlamps, and any other accessories that put a strain on the alternator, and watch the gauge to see if it decreases voltage or amperage. As a rule, if the voltmeter is higher when the engine is running then when the engine is not, you can confidently assume that the alternator is charging.
  2. Open the hood, and with the car engine off, loosen the negative battery cable so that it can be removed with little effort. With the battery cable still loosely attached to the terminal, crank the engine, then pull the battery cable completely free of the terminal. If the engine continues to run, the alternator is providing enough voltage to power the electric circuits that provide spark to the spark plugs, electric fuel pumps, etc. You can increase the demand on the alternator by turning on headlamps, heater blower fans, and other electrical accessories to determine the draw capability of your alternator. If the engine immediately dies when the cable is removed, the alternator is probably bad
1. Put a voltmeter as close to the alternator as possible. (Positive and Negative both.) If you can put the meter leads directly on or in the wire coming off the alternator that would be optimum.

2. Now start the car and turn all accessories off and check the voltage level. It should be between 13.5 and 15.1 volts. (depends on your make and model of car) It is a good idea to write down all voltage readings your taking. The main thing your looking for is a drop in voltage. Once you hit around 12.5, your alternator is not going to produce any additional amperage.

3. Now turn on one accessory at a time. Write down that accessories fuse rating. Keep turning on accessories and adding fuse ratings until the voltage falls to 12.5. Now add 15 amps if your electric cooling fans are on and 10 amps per battery in your system. Your numbers may look like this.

2 batteries- 20 amps
Cooling fan- 15 amps
Headlights - 10 amps
A/C blower - 10 amps
Rear Dfrst - 15 amps
High Beams - 10 amps
Fuel Pump - 10 amps

How do I check alternator amperage on a 2001 maxima?

are you reading your voltage when engine is running. All load must be on in order to determine if your alternator is working properly. The voltage should maintain above 13 volts when fully loaded engine running at idle. if all is fine then check your battery terminal make they are clean and also your body ground the smaller cable that usually connected from the negative side of the battery to the car body. also check your terminal at the alternator terminal make sure they are clean also.
