There is a diagnostic trouble code stored in one or both of these modules. Electronic Suspension Control and Traction Control. You would first need to retreive the codes and then perform necessary repairs. Then if needed clear codes with a scan tool. Although I will say that usually the warnings will go out when the issues are repaired.

The torque converter clutch circuit may be at fault. The best way to determine the problem is to have a scanner/computer to read check engine codes.

SOURCE: How to Turn off Service Traction Control and ESC messages

I had this problem with my 2007 HHR. I drove away with the service engine and the service traction light on. The car was stuttering through the gears. I took it back and they checked it. They disconnect some wires while they change the oil and one was loose. The service engine turned off but the service traction stayed on. We disconnected the battery for 3 minutes and it fixed the problem. Some of those other guys spent up to 300 dollars to fix the problem. Hope it works out for you.

SOURCE: Chevy HHR 2008 LT 2.4. Message ESC OFF, SERVICE

Hello and welcome. the engine reduce power waraning is the key to the other problems. this is normally a problem with the electronic throttle system. the engine control module disables the traction control system when it detects a engine problem, in your case a problem with the electronic throttle system. you shouldnt drive with this concern. this is normally covered under the vehicles 100,000 mile warranty. you need to conteact your nearest dealer for help

SOURCE: My 2008 Malibu Service ESC

My 2008 Chevy Malibu is doing the same thing! I have 55,000 miles on it. Plus the "Service Traction" message appears also????? I was wondering if there has been any recalls on this?? A couple of days before this, I tried to set my cruise control and it would not come on, finally I got it engaged and then it just kicked back off............how aggrevating! I bought a new car not to deal with these issues. At this point I would not recommend a Malibu to anyone!!

Sorry that this isn't a solution, just saying I am dealing with the same problem.

What does it mean in my 2008 Chevrolet Malibu the esc service light is on and it say traction is off

Quite common fault, bad sensor or a short in that system. Sometimes just cleaning the connectors on and around the wires and fuse will cure it. But it will need checking.

My car is saying service ESC

That light means that the computer control module has detected a fault in the Electronic stability control system and it turned on the light to alert you. Right now the system is turned off for your safety. You now need the system scanned for the fault code that is set in the control modules memory.

Hi my Chevy Malibu tells me to service my traction and esc, what does that mean? When I turn off my car then turn it on again it goes away but then comes back. Why?

It is a faulty MAP sensor, or Manifold Absolute Pressure... It is a sensor that tells the fuel injection computer how much fuel to use... Common symptoms are:
1. Check engine light comes on and stays on
2. Another light that looks like the back of a car with squiggly screech marks comes on and off (faulty MAP sensor)
3. Kind of odd feeling to the way it drives, similar to transmission symptoms
4. Difficulty starting engine, especially in cold weather
5. Reduced fuel efficiency
