First thing is to get the trunk open
(Try to push down the trunk lid before pressing the fob)
ok, let's assume you got it open. Closely inspect the bundle of wires that go into the trunk lid. You will find a small section that will flex when the lid goes from closed to full open. That's the spot to look VERY closely at the flex point. You may find a wire that looses contact due to mechanical agitation while previous openings and closings of the trunk ( a million times).
Fix the wire and spray the trunk latch first with penetrating lube then with pure lube. WITH THE LID STILL OPEN check the remote and the dash button and ensure rhe actions actuate the trunk lid solenoid at the latch.

you have a fuse for it ,check the fuse box ,it might not say trunk on fuse panel, you might need to pull those fuses out one by one checking each one to see if blown, if the center between the two sides are broke the fuse is blown, hope this helps you, thanks robert b.

Check your fuse box, look on the diagram and locate the fuse (10 amp most likely) for the auto trunk. The clicking is the relay, it also operates the keylees entry for the doors.
Good luck

One of the common issue with this trunk lock system is the latch itself. You have to fix a small plastic part in the trunk. First try to open the trunk with your fob or the key while pushing down on the trunk lid- it will not pop it open but should unlatch it so you can raise it up.
OK first get the trunk open, try the push down while trying the key trick I discribed above. If it doesn't -well, the hard way is to climb inside the trunk and take off the carpet cover on the inside of the trunk lid. About 9 phillips screw heads usually covered by carpet pads. Easy to do with it open- upside down in the dark is a little more challenging. With the carpet cover off, you should be able to tug on the pushrods that activate the truck opening latch.
The part to take off is shiney and has three screws on it directly behind the rear license plate but on the inside. Unsnap the pushrods and unplug the ram type device.
the next image will show hopefully the arm location that broke off. Maybe it will be a angle break that will glue together well. That ivory u-shaped ram activates and drives the post forward to move the pushrods.
The broken piece will look like this if this is the issue.
Before taking all this apart, look over the latch mechanism and look for anything that may have fallen down between the latch for anything preventing the metal lever just above the big rubber boot from sliding.
Does the door locks and gas tank door work like they should, if not then it amight be the actuator module on the drivers door as this has also been an issue.
On the switch side, swap and use the gas tank switch and this will rule out if the switch is bad or not. They are identicle and should take no time to rule out the switch. Next would be the actuator.
Button inside glove box (on left side) disables trunk opening...just push it again and trunk can be opened...worked for my 2007 Avalon. I must have bunped it by accident to disable the trunk and didn't realize the button existed. Toyota dealer said bring it in for $125 diagnostic but then I saw the cure in the car manual.
