SOURCE: 1997 Mercury Mountaineer

if the engine is a 4.6L the pcv will be on top and in middle of pass side valve cover.pull to remove.
if the engine is a 4.0L the pcv is located at the rear(firewall) of drivers side valve cover.this pcv has lock tabs holding it in,turn then pull to remove, the lock tabs are part of the valve cover so take care when removing not to harm tabs.

Fuel pump is most likely the cause. Probably just barely making the required pressure to start. Needs to maintain 60-66 psi while cranking to start.

SOURCE: 1997 Mercury Mountaineer What is Catalyst Efficiency Below (Bank

it means the catalyst is worn out, the efficiency is monitored by sensors, when the Cat falls below a certain reading or "threshold" the code is generating telling u that u need a new catalytic converter.

I have a 1997 mercury mountaineer started kind of chugging backfired changed plugs wires and now both coils it pops chugs has no power was running fine then just started this outta the blue need help

Mountaineers are very notorious for poor Timing Chain Systems and it may have slipped a few degrees and this will cause the notorious backfires.
Replace the Timing Chain Guides and re-time it and it will solve the backfire and sluggishness

97 mercury mountaineer. won't start

hi,

watch your oil pressure when cranking, you have to have some oil pressure to get the fuel system to start. you may have to find the hot wire at the relay and energize it to see if it is indeed the fuel pump going out. if its been sitting and its a 97 the fuel pump just might have went, you can also try hitting the gas tank from the outside in the middle to see if that works too. have a water hose or fire extinguisher around when your working on fuel system and leave one of your battery cable a little loose..

I have a 1997 Ford Mercury Mountaineer I go to start it and it wont turn over but it has fire

I suggest check battery charge, starter and ignition system condition; fuel pressure and fuel injection delivery system.

If you have some anti-theft system, check if this inst activated or some aftermark alarm.

Hope helps.

This car you are driving is 20 years old. Have you thought of getting a newer model? It sounds like you are having too many problems.
