When it is cold outside the auto trans doesn't want to shift into any gear. After running for a while it shifts but then goes into safe mode and locks into second. If I shift to N and turn the key off and back on while rolling it will start shifting fine until I stop, and then the process starts over again. Maybe a temp sensor??
The fluid and filter are fine, they have been replaced a few times. Like I said it only happens in the winter when it is cold. The trans works fine all summer long. The fluid and filter are fine, they have been replaced a few times. Like I said it only happens in the winter when it is cold. most auto trans don't shift into reverse when low. Reverse takes the most fluid of all the gears. Check for a bad shift solenoid or wires to and from that circuit. Most trans-axles have them now.
sounds like an electrical problem with the transmission ...these transmissions are fully electronic and the gears are engaged by servo valves these are controlled by the computer.... if there is any problem with the engine or a few other things it will be put into safe mode and it wont engage overdrive ..it may need to be scanned to see if any codes exist in the auto trans ecm..
when in auto shift mode you place gear selector in auto shift and as you drive you are in control of upshifting and down shifting, when you want to shift up you slide shifter to the right and to down shift you slide shifter to the left, but also know that the vehicle will up shift on its own if rps are to high and will not downshift all the way back to first, and try not to take off in higher gears that nwill burn the transmission
Your trans is stuck in safe mode, you are only using 2nd gear, this means it is not shifting but staying at a gear so you will not damage the trans. This is an electrical setting , however usually comes from the computer receiving bad information , rough shift, however it can be reset. Remove the positive battery cable for 30 minutes then see if it shifts, also check your fluid level, it can go into safe mode from low fluid if you made a turn and the trans slipped from low fluid . If your trans goes back into safe mode again have it checked, most important, do not drive over 45 mph or allow your rpms to raise over 3 , I have seen many motor problems that spawned from this type of trans problem, if not corrected.
Is it manual or auto trans? If manual the gear lube is thicker when cold and the syncronizers tend to stick and not slide free for grind free shifting or for locking into gear.
If Auto trans if the jeep is warmed up setting then cycle the gears before driving. If that helps then the fluid is not getting through the valve body properly. It could be metal in the body or filter or cold seals are letting fluid by til the seals warm, expand and hold pressure. I'm assuming trans fluid is good, not old. One item that can lead to poor cold shift in an auto trans is a bad torque convertor. Since it seems to be a second gear issue the second section of the trans could have a bad seal. In an auto trans I'd take to a shop and have a cold pressure test done. They will tell which one is the problem.
