Fuel injection, could be a few things. Bad injectors, I forget the term for it but the unit that tells what injector to spray at the right time, or even regulator.

Have you checked that you have power to the coil on cranking? You may also want to check wether you have a good strong spark at the spark plug.It could be an ignition module breaking down.If you have no power to the coil you may need to change the ignition relay. Its close to the battery.

there wouldn't be any power at the fuel pump unless car was running or if the engine is being cranked over. When you first turn the key on there is about 5second of power at the pump then it turns off.Is the check engine light on?if so have you put a code reader on it to see what code it is.I had the same problem with a cavilier. For the longest time i thought it was the fuel pump but it turned up to be the ignition module.I was told that if the igniton module wasn't working then the fuel pump would't get power

Electric fuel pumps are known for burning out if you run them out of gas, pull the fuel line at the trottle-body, have someone turn the key on and see if you get fuel-flow, you may also check the fuel pump fuse and relay to make sure they are good.

Have you changed the fuel filter? Did it die while driving, or just wouldn't start? Don't use starting fluid on a gas engine! It will cause a lot more problems than it solves. Ether, starting fluid is made for diesel engines... not gas, not ever. If it won't start, it isn't lacking ether. It's lacking gas, air or spark.

Dan if you can hear the pump kick in, wouldn't that mean that is still working?
Yes, but doesn't mean the pump itself isn't worn and not making enough pressure.
Thank you for your help. Just seems like a weird time for everything to stop exactly when I ran out of gas
Could be a plugged in tank filter too. When you run the tank dry all debris and contaminates get sucked into the sock
