An alternator converts rotary energy into electrical energy by moving a magnetic field (the armature) thru the coils in the housing. The magnetic field MUST be present for the alternator to generate electricity. It is initially created by the excitation current that is supplied thru the charging warning light and the parallel resistor (mounted on the back of the voltage gauge). If the excitation current is too weak (bad resistor, bad bulb, bad connection), but present, the alternator will start charging ONLY at higher RPM levels. If the excitation current is not present at all, the alternator will never charge.

Once the alternator starts charging, it supplies its own field current. Since there is now voltage on both sides of the light/resistor combo, the light goes off. Once the alternator starts charging, the light/resistor combo has no effect.

If the charging warning light is on, there is voltage on one side of the bulb and not the other, and there is a problem, usually in the alternator.

The alternator coils produce AC voltage, which is not useful for our purposes. The alternator includes six charging diodes (one-way check valves for electricity) that convert the AC voltage to slightly-pulsing DC voltage. If one diode is failed open, the charging amperage will be reduced. If one diode is failed shorted, there will be AC ripple in the output voltage, and you will get whine in the radio. As more diodes fail, the conditions will worsen.

find and check voltage regulator. from the reading it sounds like battery voltage if alternator is working should be 14.2-14.5 VDC

when i increase the RPM to 1500 or more the voltage rise up to 14.2 volts how do i test the drive belt to make sure it is tight enough?

There is an tensioner pulley on car, It has an internal spring to keep the correct tension of belt. You can look at various sites for price.

  • Joe Russell Aug 21, 2018

this car don't have the internal spring it have a adjustment screw and i don't know how tight the belt suppose to be can you tell me how to adjust the belt?

  • Steve Pack

Looks like you need to turn bolt clockwise to tighten

  • Joe Russell Aug 21, 2018

how do i know when the belt is tight enough?

  • Steve Pack
    Steve Pack Aug 22, 2018

find longest side if belt and press down with you thumb, if it defects more 1/2 inch tighten tensioner 1/4 to 3/8 deflection is desirable. Over tightening a belt will place an extra load on pulleys. uses a tape measure to measure deflection . If you tight adjustment bolt clockwise and it loosens the belt then turn it CCW.

the alternator was charging a little but now it is not charging at all maybe 9 volts 2 new alternator been replace and 2 battry what all i need to check to fix the problem? there is a oil leak above the alternator look like it coming from around the camshaft sensor getting on the alternator i'm not to sure.

  • Anonymous Aug 22, 2018

oil leak around alternator is grease leaking out, bearing seize. I've told everything I know to do. without me inspecting car, that's all I can do

charging or alternator fuse may be bad. try cleaned thee battery terminals and cables, ensure that they are shiny

  • Joe Russell Aug 22, 2018

i test for voltage drop by connecting the black lead of the multimeter to the (-) side of the battry and the red lead to the alternator case i didn't get no reading on my digital multimeter why?

  • Joe Russell Sep 02, 2018

the rubber was seprated from the harmonic balancer and that was letting the crank pulley slip and it wasn't turning the alternator pulley and that was causing the alternator not to charge so i replace the harmonic balancer now the alternator is charging the voltage is 14.4 volts with nothing on and 14.2 volts with the headlight and fan on high.

SOURCE: why the alternator don't charge at idle?

Don't raise the idle speed, because that will adversely affect the engagement of reverse and drive and cause the car to creep forward at stop lights. Most likely there is a shorted diode in the alternator rectifier. If you can find a rectifier at a parts supplier, it is not difficult to install. Otherwise, you will have to replace the alternator.

The easiest way to see if a MAF is defective is to disconnect it, if the engine runs better then the MAF is at fault. You will get a check engine light.

What cause the battry light to stay on when driving?

The battery is not charging. Check the drive belt is not slipping, otherwise it could be an alternator fault.

ALTERNATOR NOT CHARGING

have an accredited auto electrician check the out put of the alternator . Check the condition of the drive belt and the tension of the belt. place a multimeter across the battery terminals and it should read battery voltage . Increase rpm to around 2.000 rpm and the reading should go up to 14.5-15.5 volts. It doesn't move I would suspect a faulty regulator or diode pack in the alternator.

Check the idle rpm (efi around 900 rpm ) carby around 750-800rpm. Very few alternators charge under 750 rpm as it requires 14 volts to charge the battery and at low revs the alternator will be producing around 11.5-12 volts. Check tension and condition of drive belt.

THE ALTERNATOR IS NOT CHARGING THE BATTERY WHAT IS THE SOLUTION

Loose drive belt---loose wires or connections on alternator--- Dirty battery terminals--clean to shiny metal both battery and leads.---- faulty rectifier in alternator.. Pace a multimeter across the battery terminals and set to dc volts reading Place revs at around 1500 rpm and read voltage . if no reading set to ac voltage and repeat. If you get an ac volts reading replace the alternator.

Voltage flexuates from14volts to 11volts when 2003 tahoe is in drive and brake is apply at stop sign and also when idling

Check that the idle speed is not too low in drive . Should be around 900 rpm in neutral and the idle speed is adjuste in drive to no less than 750 rpm. IT takes rpm for the alternator to charge the battery so if you have 11 volts then the car is runnung off the battery and not the alternator. It needs 13.5 volts to charge a battery and most regultors are set at 14 vvolt to 15.5 volts. If the vehicle is runnung from the battery as I stated then items like blinkers and stop light operation will show as fluctuations on the gauge. Have the system check . Make sure the drive belt to the aklternator is correctly adjusted as a slipping belt will also cause a problem.

2 possible solutions. 1 or more serpanteen belts are not engaging ( slipping will smoke like he'll! I burnt all 3 when I started my j30 '96 after almost 2 years! Had to charge the battery overnight..everyone really should have one! Times like that you are gladjya did! And my battery was replaced the day I stopped driving it!). Either that...clogged fuel filter. Seriously, it happened in all three j30's I have owned, and one Jaguar XJ6 with saddle back gas tanks. $55 usually to change...maybe a lil' more depending the garage hrly rates.

03 Mazda Tribute's charging indicator light begins flashing on and off when engine reaches 1200 rpm and becomes contineously on at and above 1500 rpm. With engine idling or decelerating to below 1200 rpm...

It may be that the light is being tripped due to an "over voltage" condition. The faster you spin the alternator/engine the higher the voltage output of the alternator. I would test the voltage coming out of the alternator. It should be at about 14.3v or so max. If it gets into the 16v+ range when you increase the engine RPM then the voltage regulator has failed and needs to be replaced.
