SOURCE: fuel gauge quit working. stuck on half a tank.

the fuel level sending unit has been incorporated into the fuel pump assembly.
the fuel pump is most likely your problem, these pumps dont like fuel additives so be careful.
most common problem with these fuel gauges is the sending unit, the sender contacts will errode over time fuel additives seem to speed the process.

replace the fuel pump assembly

hope this helps

SOURCE: ford focus fuel gauge not working

it might be the floater inside the gas tank or the sending unit which sends the info to the ecu and tells you how much gas you have replace that and it should work, sometimes it can be a faulty cluster gauge too

2000 buick regal 3.8 fuel guage not working properly what to do

Well it could be the sending unit in the fuel take or it could be the gauge in the dash ! I had a Cadillac Seville I was checking at the dealer I worked at , hooked up the tester an tested the gauge . The gauge worked fine so I pulled the fuel tank an put in a new sending unit. It work fine so I sent the vehicle on home , two days later it was back for the same problem . I pulled the tank again an the fuel pump Assemble an noticed the baffle in the bottom of the tank had come lose wedged under the float arm of the sending unit ! That's what was wrong , it wouldn't go below half a tank . I 'm not saying this is your problem because this was back in the 80's an they used metal fuel tanks ! Yours is more then likely plastic !

Now a days you can hook - up a scan tool an check it !
  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. With a scan tool, observe the fuel level parameter in the Powertrain Control Module data list.
Does the scan tool indicate that the fuel level parameter is within the specified range?
3%-98%
Hope this helps you out !

Temp gauge stays cold

If the thermostat is bad (i.e. stuck open at all times), this would allow coolant to circulate in the engine even when it is below the desired operating temperature. This leads to OVERcooling of the engine. You can either replace the thermostat as a first step or remove it and test it -- closed when cold, open when heated above 190-200F.

Guages not working,

If all voltages checked ok,then most probably its faulty instrument cluster board on which gauges are connected.Yes if cluster circuit board looks ok,then also it can be faulty.Somewhere there is minute short or burn on board then such prolem arises.
Also check the fuse box.One under hood and other under dash.Inspect each and every fuse and see if all are fine or not.

All your gauges are working. The gas gauge Is also working. When you fill it, you will fill over the limit the fuel level switch will go by a couple of gallons. So the gauge will not drop for a few miles. until you use up the excess fuel

Fuel light keeps popping up and when it does, fuel gauge drops

Sounds like a bad sending unit. It clips to the fuel pump in the tank. It's not hard to remove and pretty self explanatory if you look at it, but if you don't have any experience with fuel line quick disconnects, I wouldn' try it at home. If you do try it, remember 2 things: Run that thing as low on gas a you can first and when it comes to disconnecting the fuel lines, push, squeeze (until it clicks), then pull apart. The tank is held in by 2 or 4 13 or 15mm bolts and a few hoses and lines. Mark the position of the pump before you pull it out.

1994 dodge ram 1/2 ton. It runs fine until I have less than a half a tank of gas. Then it tries to cut out/backfire and won't even go over 30 mph.

Is it possible the gauge is broken? Or it is possible the filter on the pump is plugged and it only runs right when gas can spill over the top, into the pump. Have you hooked up a fuel pressure gauge?

Have a 1988 hilux. The fuel gauge shows the fuel level even when the ignition is off. Otherwise it seems to work fine.

Toyota fuel gauges from that time were actually meant to work like that! It's not drawing power from your battery with the ignition off, the needle just stays at the last reading.
