This is a Pinion Baring - it needs to be replaced. This is not an easy job - you need to know what you are doing. Remove the rear differential cover; remove the ring gear and carrier assembly; remove the drive shaft; remove Pinion Flange Nut; Remove Pinion Flange; Remove Pinion. Press off old Pinion baring be careful not to lost Pinion shim located beneath Pinion baring - press on new Pinion baring - and reassemble.

My 2005 Chrysler town & country is making a whining noise and gets louder when I accelerate. Also my light is on for rear defroster, but it doesn't defrost. Help!!!!!!

If the whining noise is coming from under the hood, have all pulleys checked for wear. ( Alternator/tensioner/idler etc ). A bad pulley will whine. As for the rear defrost, check the wires that go to the back window. There will be one on each side of the rear glass. One may be seperated/broken from the glass causing the defrost not to operate

Rear bearing

I would be checking first for a seized brake at that wheel as defective bearings normally will still turn by hand and when driven as you describe the noise would be a pronounced grumble. Whining noises occur when driven as you describe because the spider gears in the diff are straight cut and will make a noise when one wheel is spinning and that makes them work

I blew out the rear differential on my 94 firebird 3.4l auto. i would like some info on how far into replacing the rear diff i need to go. it makes a horrible grinding noise from it so its pretty far...

You should be able to buy a good used one from a junk yard for half what the parts will cost to fix yours. To rebuild rear ends you need all kinds of special tools to set the end play and run out. It is not that hard of a job to replace the whole thing either. Especially if you have four wheel disc. spray up all the bolts and the brake lines with penetrate the day before you start.

Hope this helps

Just a note, I owned and independent trans shop, an AAMCO and manage sever trans shops over the years and in all that time I don't think we rebuilt more than one or two rears. However we replace many.

2002 Pontiac Aztek - AWD disable light and Anti Lock Light

AWD disabled from a sensor unit in rear differential that senses high temp. This thing is over $300. Whine is from fluid. Need to change fluid. This versatrack fluid is about $40 per bottle and you need 3 bottles. Thumping noise is from loose rear knuckle bushings. These are part of the entire rear knuckle assy. and you must replace complete knuckle.

Rear end whining

if you have a constant whine that raises pitch the faster you go, you have improper backlash adjustment in the differential (rear end), if you have a whooping noise that whoops faster as you drive faster then you have a bad wheel bearing, both can be the result of low fluid level in the rear end.

Well you can remove the sensor in the diff and make sure that looks ok they g obad quiet often also woulnd not hurt too remove the rear diff cover and inspect the rear end if it is whining and you dont see anything wrong i would refill it with lucas oil/grease and start praying check the pinion too and see if it has any play in it

Whirring/whining noise from rear trans-axle

check your rear end and make sure it has plenty of gear oil..if full then there is friction in it somewhere and it is probly getting ready to go out.

Transmission or rearend

IF its whining noise then first check the transmission fluid in the rear axle if its 4X4 truck ,if its not 4X4 then check the brakes or the wheel is making contact to any metal part ....

Good luck....
