Question about 1999 Oldsmobile Silhouette

2 Answers

My 1999 Oldsmobile Silhouette started overheating into the red yesterday. I drove it to the nearest gas station about two minutes after it started overheating. waited for it to cool down, then filled with water. Drove it home fine. I noticed at home though it had a small leak under it and thought maybe it was just from when I filled it at the gas station. First flush was ok, no leaks. during the second flush a pretty good trickle came out the passenger side of the engine. I thought it was the water pump, so i changed it with a new gasket, but it is still leaking. Anywhere else it could be coming from? It seems to leaking from right below the power steering pump but i cant see anywhere it could be coming from.

    which engine do you have?

  • dave mccullough May 11, 2010

There are plenty of places mate. hat mad you pay for a new water pump and gasket? There are things called 'core plugs' over the engine, though I dont think this is your problem. I know it sounds stupid but it may be it could be the water temp switch may have popped out of your engine. Try looking at it at a different direction with a small mirror, it should give you a better Idea. Sorry mate thats all I can offer for as advice, if you can mail me back with your findings, I'll help you further. Regards, Dave.

2001 Oldsmobile Silhouette...Overheating, changed the thermostat, no signs of leaking, and the oil looks fine. At idle it takes 20 minutes to max the temperature gauge (red) and while driving it take

Usually the problem with no heat and overheating is low coolant, thermostat, or a faulty water pump impeller.
The radiator may not be full of liquid coolant, or the pump may not be moving the coolant thru the block.

that is the pressure switch in your gas tank it detects pressure or vacuum in the closed system it has to be checked with a special device called a pressure cart and a scan tool to pinpoint the problem best taking it to a tech or garage to get it repaired.

1999 Oldsmobile Silhouette. At times it seems

a bad tps sensor will cause: transmission shift issues, bucking, jerking, idle surging, engine cutoff, hesitation on takeoff, surge while cruising down highway. to check, remove connector from tps, use a ohms meter and probe center and any one of the other connectors, move throttle slow. if it jumps or does not stay steady while moving throttle, its bad. if the needle on ohms meter moves good then the tps is ok. move throttle plate slowly.

One guess is there is air in the cooling system. The air pockets will cause temporary overheating (fluctuating guage).

It sounds like a bad head gasket is creating these air pockets.

2003 Oldsmobile Silhouette ran out of gas,now it won't start HELP

Put the gas in the tank, let everything settle, turn key off, then back on to on position, but NOT start. Let the fuel relay engage the pump and draw some gas pressure. Give it a good minute and it'll start right up.
