Question about Pontiac Bonneville

1 Answer

92 3800/SE. The gas needle floats, going up inclines and downhill so i never really know how much gas i have in the tank. Its not a huge problem until it begins to read at the 1/4 tank level, then will go as far as telling me that i'm just about empty (turning corners and doing U-turns)and on two occasions has stalled out, as soon as the gas levels out it will restart. can be annoying. is there a way to correct this??

My jeep also runs out of gas around the 1/8th tank needle line and i dont know if happens only when low but when i make a right turn my motor wants to cut out do i have a gas float problem or a thrott

you definitely have a float/sender issue. this is going to require some facts about your jeep and some research. jeep put different sending units and instrument gauges in same year vehicles so find out what capacity tank you have. also test the operation of the gauge and sender before re-installing the tank

Gasgage not going to full when i fill up.

You have to ask yourself if you really really want to fix this.

There's a float and potentiometer inside the gas tank. If the float is getting blocked from floating all the way up or the potentiometer is only going so far up, that would create this problem. The whole assembly is called the "gas tank sending unit".

The tough part is that you probably have to drop the gas tank to replace or fix these items. It's rare that cars have access holes under the back seat for this.

My gas gauge is on E when my car is full of gas, i run gas in the tank until the tank over flows.that way i know it's full of gas.

Sounds like your fuel float has failed. You will need to install a new one. They are not usually very expensive, but the installation is difficult, requiring the removal of the gas tank. Unless you are mechanically inclined, you would probably need to take it to a mechanic to have it fixed.

i dont know the specifics of a Regal, but usually, when a needle fluctuates too much, is because the float gauge in the gas tank is worn out, or its mount became loose. You cant see that effect on a full tank because the instrument needle and the float are pegged against the stop.

Gas gauge doesnot work 1986 ford pickup

The float in your tank has gone bad, happens over time. Either reset your trip odometer each time you fill if you know how many miles you can get out of a tank or you'll have to drop your tank and replace your float. On the old Fords its not a huge job, just a pain. Make sure your tank is as empty as can be before you drop it though! I'm speaking from experience here...

If you do plan on replacing the fuel filter, just take the filter off and see if you can just run the fuel pump and catch the fuel in a gas can.
