How do i remove the key switch from my 1984 dodge ram

To answer your question:
After removing the plastic covers from the steering column, the special bolts that hold the switch housing must be drilled. Drill through the center of the head with abit the same size as the threaded portion. You can match that up by holding bits to the bottom of the bolt while gauging it by eye.
After drilling approximately 1/4" deep, I inserted a metal rod, smaller diameter than the new hole, tilted to put medium pressure on the inside of the hole in the "bolt head" (those are shear bolts whose heads snap off at a determined torque to make theft more difficult) then twisted the rod around while maintaining contact with the inner surface area until the head snapped off.
The lower half of the switch housing separates from the top half at this point. Take both halves to the hardware store to match thread pitch and length. I strongly recommend Allen head bolts. They will fit easier, assuming hex heads will fit at all.
I used fingernail polish as thread locker. It's just enough, without being a pita later, plus it only cost me $1.07
Pay attention to the little screws that must be removed before using force to remove the switch. There's one between the bottom, rear of the switch housing and the dash, and of course, there's one on the switch housing that you can see opposite of the side the key slides in.

It is possible to plug the main connector in upside down. Check to see if this is what you did. Other than that, does the engine roll over?

Problem with starting my 2003 dodge ram

My father has the same problem with his 2001 Chrysler Sebring, the key will go into the ignition switch but wont turn. Called the dealer and seems the tumblers inside the ignition have gotten stuck, the solution... put the key in the ignition and tap it gently with a hammer (plastic tip if you have it) and it worked fine. Not sure what the guys at Autozone are pull but on a Ram 5.7 Hemi there are individual coils, not one, I should know I also have a 2003 Ram 1500 and have changed the plugs (not fun)... I have a code scanner (Hypertec) and when I've gotten a check engine light I check it with the scanner. Turned out mine had a problem with the air sensor in the intake. $15 part fixed the problems. Good Luck.

it sounds like your lock rod cylinder in your sterring colum is broken. That can be expensive to fix! $500 or so. There is an alternitive though. Go to a alarm and window tint shop. Have the install remoteless key start up on you car. Car will start up fine. All your doing is bypassing the ignition swith and sending a signal to your starter directly. It will work beleive me. To check if this is your problem run a cable or wire from the starter to your batter from under the hood, if the car starts(make sure the keys are in the on postion) its your lock rod cylinder! If it doesnt its a bad starter or ignition switch...most likely ignition switch.

Blower motor for heat and ac would only come on when I messed with the tilt wheel. Now it wont work at all.

Try the ignition switch, dodge has them on backorder so there is a problem that just has not got big enough to recall. The switch is only $14.30 unless you have a V10. Mine started off as the turnsignals quit working unless you moved the tilt steering and the the heater would only work in the tilt up position.
