Remove the dipstick for the transmission fluid (red one) - get a funnel that fits inside the dipstick tube - and add transmission fluid till proper level. Do not overfill.

How can transmmision fluid leak from rack and pinion

No, no, it just can't. Only power steering fluid goes in and out of the rack and pinion. Transmission fluid travels through the cooler lines (a supply and return line) to the radiator or a separate cooler in front of the radiator. Check again. Is it transmission fluid or power steering fluid? Transmission fluid may be leaking onto the rack and pinion.

How can i check the transmmision fluid, i only found a cap but not a dip stick thanks, also i can't find the rad cap, only the plastic reservoir and the lid is very hard to turn to open

There is no dipstick. This is not one of GM's finest accomplishments. The cap that you found is for filling/adding the fluid only. To check the level of the fluid. there is a plug in the transmission housing near where the right axle goes into the transmission. With the engine running, remove the plug. If fluid starts draining out, you transmission is full. If fluid does not come out, add fluid until you can see fluid dripping from the hole. (This is easiest to do with the vehicle on a hoist.)

I have a small transmission fluid leak for about 6-8 months now. could the problem be as simple as a gasket issue or tightening the filter?

i would say it would be a gasket but the is also a bottle that you can get at napa or carquest and you just put some into your transmission and its should stop the leak and its like $20 so its cheaper and take less time then if you see the product dosent work just flush the transmmision and change the gasket good luck

Check transmmision fuild

locate the transmission dipstick on the right or left side of the engine, toward the rear of the engine. it is similar to the oil dipstick, which is probably marked "engine oil" anyway. make sure the engine is hot and running. take the dipstick out and wipe it clean. notice the hash marks and writing inscribed on the stick. the level should be between the hash mark area for the "hot" marks. if it is low, but visible on the stick, add a 1/2 pint to a pint at a time. DON'T OVERFILL. use the correct trans fluid. probably MERCON V, the trans fluid type might be marked on the stick. it's also in the owners manual.

if you have a manual trans, you'll have to get under the vehicle and remove the fill plug located on the left side upper part of the trans. it has a fairly large head and should be easy to spot. use your finger to check the level. it should be 1/2 inch from the top of the hole.

Oil transmmision

Automatics do not have a dip stick. The transmission pan has two plugs on the bottom, one for filling and one for draining. The fluid must be pumped in the upper plug at running temperature until full.

Bad transmmision

How do you know it's bad? There's a lot of things that can happen that will cause the transmission to behave in ways it shouldn't. Is it automatic? If it's not shifting right, it could be a number of things. Is it a manual? There could be a lot of things that cause trouble there. Post more info on what it is and how it's supposedly bad, and we can go from there.
