If it was me i would check the neutral safety switch if its a 5-speed also checkout these two websites www.autozone.com and www.alldatadiy.com to see if you can get any more information.i wish you the best of luck Michigan Man also checkout the starter and the wires on it.

There is what they call a back-up light/safety neutral switch, all in one, on the side of the transmission, that costs approx $10 at autozone, and other autoparts stores. Very easy to change, if handy at all. I suspect this is your problem & will cure it. If a picture of what to look for would help, let me know. Good Luck.

Check the level of the transmission fluid. If that's ok, you probably have a faulty neutral safety switch.

Sometimes my 1997 Ford explorer will start and other times it does not. What could be the problem. The battery is fine and I recently had the battery cables replaced.

Could be as simple as the neutral switch out of position if it sometimes won't crank over. Turn the switch on, depress the brake, and pull it to neutral position to see if will crank. If it will, readjust the neutral switch while in park position.

Won,t shift out of park?

Check to see if you have brake lights if not fix the switch on brake pedal. If yes you need to look at the shift interlock system, normally a little white box just below the key on the column. On fords you can put key in and turn a little bit so it's straight vertical and shift to neutral then start it. Your problem is with the shift interlock system that gets activated with the press of brake pedal

1955 Ford Crwn Vic neutral switch will permit start in any gear not just neut or park. Is this a 2 or 3 speed auto transmission? will start in drive selection and only shift once witn no kickdown gear at...

A 1955 Ford would have a Ford-o-matic transmission which has three speeds forward. The transmission starts out in second gear unless you shift into low.
I am not aware of these transmissions having a neutral safety switch.
The 3 speed automatic transmissions that started in low and had a downshift to second under load were first used in the mid 1960s.
