guessing is a mugs game especially when there is a an ECM program that stores and reports all faults
all the mechanic should be doing is reading the fault codes and fixing what is found
you can go to places like auto spares shops and have the codes read free so that you know what needs fixing

Car seems to not shift into 3rd when cold

The transmission will NOT shift into the final gear (overdrive) when the coolant temperature is below 177 degrees F. The OD is coolant temperature controlled. In short, the colder it is outside, the colder the engine is, and takes longer to warm up to operating temperature. The coolant, when it reaches 177 degrees F, satisfies the temperature sensor, which allows the final shift. Assuming that you do not have a thermostat that is stuck slightly open, this is a normal occurance. Thanks for choosing FixYa for assistance.

GrandAm Tranmission shifts hard

I had the same problem in my 2002 grand am GT. After taking it to a transmission shop and them telling me that I had all this stuff wrong with it that was going to cost me about 2700$ I looked elsewhere. I had an Intake Temperature Sensor that had went bad. It was registering on the check engine light after the fact. I changed it and then found out there was a loose wire in the connector. I fixed that and havent had a problem with it since
