Question about 1994 Dodge Ram

1 Answer

Engine problems I have a 94 dodge ram truck. I recently had the transmisson rebuilt and a new torque convertor put on. My problem is the check engine light is coming on. It will spit and sputter at take off and then it will usually run fine until you stop or it gets hot. It's not overheating. It is showing codes 12 and 37. If anyone can PLEASE help me I would be very thankful. Thanks again, Amy

If my codes are correct 12 is battery disconnected...likely because it was while doing job, 37 is converter clutch malfunction...Don't see a connection between those and your problem, unless a harness is pinched or disconnected. Have the shop that did the work take a look at it first...If they are reputable they will be concerned.

Depends on the engine - transmission combo. The tranny has a housing the torque convertor sits in and is mounted to the engine.

do you have an st, ws, Laramie or sport? 2 wheel or 4 wheel, 6 or 8 cyl engine?

according to amazon and advance auto the replacement torque convertor is the same for 96 and 98 v8's both 5.2 and 5.2 engines so I would say yes. The drive trains are similar and a junk yard can verify via the vin #'s too.

Its an 02 how do i check the torque convertor or flex plate bolts to see if that is were my noise is coming from

The inspection cover is usually plastic, it is bolted to the under-side of the bell-housing and it is held in place usually by 4 small bolts, and once you remove them the inspection cover should come out. (you might also have to remove the starter on some applications)

After you have removed the inspection cover most of the flex-plate and the torque converter will be exposed. Turn the engine over and use a good light to inspect for damage to the flex-plate, and also check to see if the torque converter to flex-plate bolts are tight when they revolve into a position where you can attach a good ratchet.

1997 DODGE RAM 1500 360 VERY LOW IDLE

I think you have ruled out the engine with all the parts you have replace. The transmission torque convertor is in lock up mode all the time. The engine is having to hard of a time to stay at the normal idle. The over drive clutches and soleniod are most likely damaged in the transmission.
I think you should take the vehicle to a trasnmission shop , The can check the torque convetror soleniods and pressure control soleniod.

The oil light coming on bothers me. I know you have the rebuilt engine in the vehicle but I think the oil pump in the engine is starting to go out or could be weak. The lower bearings connected to the crank shaft might be starting to leak. Have the oil pressure checked .

Error codes

Her is the definition and a list of possiable causes.

Code P1740-Torque converter clutch did not lock up when the PCM sent the command. Enabling conditions: No engine or transmissions codes are present, vehicle speed was under 70 MPH, TPS was under 33% open. When the PCM commanded the torque converter to lock, no change was detected in engine speed. Blocking action: This code can block the following monitors: none.
Testing: Check torque converter solenoid for proper operation.
P1740 TCC O/D SOL PERFORMANCE (GAS)
Theory of Operation
The Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Solenoid is used to engage the TCC which improves fuel economy.
When Monitored
The Torque Convertor Clutch (TCC) and Overdrive Clutch (OD) will be tested each time the PCM requests TCC engagement in 3rd gear and OD.
Set Condition
The DTC will set if the expected RPM drop is not achieved while attempting to engage TCC or OD. This indicates a malfunctioning torque convertor or overdrive clutch.
Possible Causes
* ENGINE DTCS PRESENT
* TRANSMISSION DTCS PRESENT
* TRANSMISSION TEMPERATURE TOO COLD
* OIL PAN CONTAINS EXCESSIVE DEBRIS
* 3-4 SHIFT SOLENOID
* SHAFT OR SEAL DAMAGE
* TCC SOLENOID
* TORQUE CONVERTER
