Question about 2000 Chevrolet Impala

2 Answers

At different times the car seems to miss fire and stutter and I have checked the fuel filter and its as clean as can be. I suspect there might be some water in the fuel but when I checked the fuel in the fuel filter there was none there.

Use a squirt bottle of water and squirt the wires and plugs to see if you can cause a failure. you will know as soon as it gets wet if it is wire and spark plugs.

It could need plug wires replace them first then adress each coil pack by checking the condition of each spark plug the one that is dirty or blackest may indicate a failing coil pack for that particular plug

needs air, fuel and spark. You have spark, make sure air filter is not clogged and the fuel pressure is up there; could also be water in fuel... dump fuel from filter in a glass bowl and take a look... replace filter and flush fuel system if water found. Injectors might need cleaning...

Check your fuel pressure regulator, just pull the vacuum line off of it and see if it is leaking fuel, it is found on the fuel rail, will be the only vacuum line on the fuel rail.

3 cylinder missing

The most common misfire causes on the cars I've worked on have been:
  1. Spark plugs
  2. Spark plug wires
  3. Ignition coil
  4. Fuel injector
  5. Wiring to fuel injector
  6. Timing Belt
  7. Vacuum leak or stuck open EGR
  8. Contaminated fuel or bad fuel pump
  9. Weak compression
  10. Blown head gasket

Check to see it th chain guides are worn. this can cause a retarded or advance on timing. Also do a compression check if you can, this will show that the valves are opening and closing on time. Run some injection cleaner through it first as a sticky injector could also be an issue.

Engine stutters as rpm's increase, seems like a miss

Have the basics been done lately? A good tuneup. Plugs, maybe wires, air filter, fuel filter, etc?

When accelerating the engine seems to stutter.

Try unplugging your Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAFS) - you'll find it on top of the metal body immediately after the air filter. I went through an 18 month ordeal - replaced fuel filter, fuel pump, dropped fuel tank and cleaned it, ran 55 gallons of fuel injector cleaner through the system - nothing! After reading some blogs on this car/engine, gave the MAFS unplug trick a try. The car instantly corrected itself (when you unplug this sensor, the engine control module reverts to factory default, allows sufficient fuel into the engine for unitterupted performance.) However, if this corrects your problem, it's only a temporary fix. Run it about 3 days - it you notice soot in the tailpipe, the factory default is running too rich. Replace the MAFS.

If this just started, maybe after a hard run, you may want to check your sparkplugs. I've melted the insulator on one of my plugs after a prolonged, spirited run causing same symptoms.
