I need a replacement drain plug - Cars & Trucks

So far, every drain plug I have removed has had a special washer often referred to as a crush ring. Some come with an aluminum washer which should be replace but I often see people put the plugs in with the same washers and have no leaks. It's a gamble however, Most auto parts houses carry replacement rings to fit drain plugs.

if not leaking,leave it alone,to drain,just disconnect bottom hose to drain,I never use drain plug,too slow.If it's a stock drain plug,then you will need to call dealer and ask for parts.

You Need A 14mm Wrench For The oil Drain Plug. The old Saying Is righty Tighty lefty Loosey.

It's easy to do - the most difficult part is going to be finding the correct wrench to fit the plugs - you need a 10mm square drive - I know it looks like it's a 3/8" square drive, but it's not, and if you use a 3/8" square ratchet drive, as many people do, you run the risk of rounding out the hole...

Park the car on level ground and set the hand brake (parking brake), slide under the rear end and remove the fill plug (the higher of the two plugs) first - if you do not get the fill plug out, do not remove the drain plug.

Once you have the fill plug out, place a drain pan under the axle and remove the drain plug (the lower plug) and allow the oil to drain - give it half an hour or so - and then replace the drain plug and add oil through the fill hole until it starts to dribble back out, and then replace the fill plug.

You need 2.5 litres (5.3 US pints) of 75W85 GL5 oil, and it helps if you get yourself one of those cheap "oil pumps" - this is just an example, I'm sure the auto parts place nearest you has something similar.

Before adding any more oil, make sure that you have securly replaced and tightened the oil drain plug (which is located on your engine's oil pan, under your car).

Should be on the back side of the oil pan about dead center. At least for the 1.8 and 2.0 liter engines. You will need a 19mm wrench or socket (if its the O.E. drain plug). Be careful when tightening the drain plug after draining the oil. The oil pan is aluminum and we replace a fair amount of them because the threads for the drain plug are stripped out. The drain plug only needs to be torqued to 22 ft-lb.

Jack up pass side.Put cardboard, BIG piece under engine just in case. Using a pan to drain the oil in put under oil pan drain plug. Remove drain plug with socket wrench. Let drain 5 min. Check the gasket on the drain plug, if bad replace with new gasket .99 cents to replace gasket only on plug. Put plug back in DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN the plug. Slide drain pan with drained oil to the front to remove oil filter. Using a filter wrench remove oil filter. Let drain. When installing new filter put a little new engine oil on the rubber gasket on the filter with your finger. Screw filter back on tighten with filter wrench. Fill van with oil from front valve cover opening.

I have a 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 and to fix this problem I removed the drain plug being careful not to damage the plastic housing. I drilled through the center of the drain plug so that I would not have to use force to get it out and crack the plastic housing. After you get it out you will see that there is a rubber washer that is used to seal the drain. NAPA sells a drain plug that will work to replace the stock plug. The part #605-1278 comes on a card that says for Ford/GM. but it worked perfectly for me.

You can remove the drain plug in the bottom on the radiator.
You can remove the lower radiator hose. Since the vehicle is 10 years old you may want to inspect the hoses for replacement anyway.

) Make sure the vehicle is cool.
) Slightly loosen the radiator cap to release any pressure.
) Re-tighten the radiator cap.
) Place a suitable container under the drain point.
) open the drain.
) Re-loosen the radiator cap again.
) Allow to drain.
) REPLACE THE DRAIN PLUG.
* At this point the radiator can be fill with water and a radiator cleaning agent- run the engine - allow to warm up.
* Re-drain the radiator - .
) REPLACE THE DRAIN PLUG.
) Refill the radiator with water/anti-freeze.
) Dispose of waste fluid according to the local regulations. Some city dumps will accept it. Some parts stores may accept it. Do not pour down the drain or dump on the ground.

There is a 3/8" square head plug above the starter. This drains the left bank of the block and can be replaced with a 1/4" pipe valve.
