Got this from another site - I was having the same problem. This worked perfectly! Remove both rear tail lamps and brake bulbs. if the area where the bulb goes into the tail lamp shows signs of excessive heat/melting, then the lamp will need to be replaced. otherwise, take a pick or small flat blade screwdriver and scrape the contacts ( the shiny metal circular strips) on the tail lamp where the brake bulb seats when installed. scrape especially where you see anything black. after scraping contacts, gently pry up under contacts to give a tighter fit to bulb contacts when installed. hope this helps . . .

Sometimes a bad ground can cause this. when the other lights are not being used the brake light can backfeed through another bulb to get a ground.

Thanks for this explanation. the driver side stop light on my 2004 GC did not work when lights on. I followed these instructions and within 5 minutes everything was fine. the connections did look a bit discoloured but a quick clean and reseating of the bulb did the trick.

If you have any extra fuses, try replacing the ones for the head lights and tail lights. Make sure the fuses you replace are the same color as the ones you replace them with, that way the voltages are the same. Another issue is that a flasher could be going out.

Headlight switch on makes tail light dim

there must be a short circuit which powers tail lights and brake lights. probably you have a dual filament bulbs which have both brake and tail light together. check for bulb, socket/or bulb housing and harness of that light.

Right brake light out; tail light works fine

most rear tail lights and turn/stop lights are the same dual filiment bulb. it is possible for your tail light to work and your brake light not to and still have a bad bulb. I would check the bulb first, your brake light works on the left yes? this would mean that the fuse is fine
