This is a very large problem with the gas caps on the threes. take the cap to the dealer and have them replaced the fuel filler pipe and the gas cap that is the only way to fix the problem. if you just replace the gas cap it will happen again.

I have a 1997 Chrysler Sebring 6 cylinder 2.5 it's been missing and will die when it I drive it for to long could be a pick up coil auto zone shows it as a distributor pickup I have replaced plugs wires...

Night be vapor locked..What's that? It when your gas tank pressure becomes greater than your gas pump...You'll be driving then it just shuts off like running out if gas... Quick fix? Open your gas cap and leave it Lise to get air into your gas tank..Clue if this is the problem...Your car will start immediately. Hints...Listen when you loosen gas cap...Can you hear air sucking back into your gas tank. Cheap fix..Take the smallest drill bit and drill a hole into the center of the gas tank..It also could be a replacement gas cap that someone put on the car..Buy the original cap..What caused the problem to start with? Over filling your gas tankk..Putting that extra 75cent to top it off..Your cars gas tank is designed to burn fumes...When you over fill a tank it sends gasoline down those vapor hoses then into a charcoal canister..Over years if doing this...It gets clogged up then the fumes can't get out the tank...It builds up pressure and becomes greater than your gas pump...Then it shuts off...If you wait long will start back...This sounds crazy....But this could really be your problem...Next time the car shuts off... loosen gas car...If it starts...BINGO....You have solved your problem... Drill a hole in gas cap or buy another canister... Usually behind the headlights... Some under car..Follow the gas line... Hope this helps you or someone else....Stop over filling your gas tanks...You'll keep this from happening....Tell others

A loose gas cap or bad gas cap can cause this ,or filling gas tank while it running .or it could be a small leak in the evap system

Failed smog test ; gross air leak at vapor recovery system. Replaced gas cap from parts house with a dealer supplied gas cap and the gross leak is gone but a minor air leak is...

If you just want to get through the smog test, they usually allow one monitor test to be incomplete and still pass.
If your area does, clear the codes and fill the fuel tank to the top.The other monitors should run and complete but the fuel tank monitor will not run with a full tank of gas so will not turn on the check engine light related to a tank vac leak.KEEP THE TANK FULL,and go get your smog test!

I can not remove nozzle from the fuel tank after i filled up my tank.I finally got it out by pulling it alot of times(may be 15 time) slowly and get out.I just wonder if i damage the internal of the tank?

I dont think you damaged the tank. There is a filler neck tube that separates where you put fuel in and the tank itself that is about 3 feet long. You could have damaged the cap less fuel fill. If you dont see any the cap less door not closing or missing I think you should be ok. If your check engine light comes on in the next could be related to small damage to the cap less system.
Your vehicle could still be under warranty for the cap less filler neck ...if there is any damage or the fuel nozzles keep getting stuck.

GMC Jimmy gas filler neck leak

Replace your filler neck. It's not hard and when you buy the new one, installation should be obvious and rather straight forward.

A fuel leak is not something to take lightly and it will get worse over time.

Most fuel systems are pressurized (that's why you'll sometimes hear a hissing sound when you open your cap) so if your filler neck is leaking it can throw a code.

Dodge dakota 2005 -check engine light(gas cap)gas cap was replaced.Fuel spills out when filling tank.Fuel lines were smoked and no clog was found.

There is a check valve in the filler hose to stop fuel from coming out seems yours might be stuck , run a metal coat hangers inside the filler neck while prying open the little fill flap. see if that helps OR you are not or have no VENT to AIR in your evap system causing excessive tank pressure.

Gas cover stuck - manual backup?

my Jaguar X Type gas cap "sticks". I can open it by wedging a corner of a credit card in the left side or the cover, then go in the car and pull the lever. There are two flimsy metal bands that hold the cover in place and they sometimes bend and then the release doesn't work.  it should open easily with the credit card wedged in; then bend back the metal bands into shape.
