Question about Jeep Wrangler

I was driving on the hgwy hit a dip at about 50 mph and when the jeep lifted it started to violenty shake front to back until I slowed down to under 30 mph. It felt like the axles were broken loose and moving back and forth. I just had the u-joints replaced at the front wheels with an alignment and tire balance. The mechanic said everything looked tight when it was in for the u-joint replacement.

Generally what you just experienced is termed "death wobble" Most times it can be traced back to worn ball joints, loose steering box where it attaches to chassis or improperly torqued wheel lugs.(torque wheel lugs in a star pattern to 40lbs, then again at 70-75lbs)
Some jeeps have a provision for adding more caster adjustment to the front alignment at the rear of the lower control arms. As a last resort, you can have more positive caster added which helps with this condition. If yours is not adjustable and no looseness has been found in track bar or other bushings, There are ball joint replacements that have a certain amount of caster change built in. Do not allow anyone to convince you that the steering damper (sideways shock on linkage) will cure the problem...It may cover it up for a short time, but the problem will return shortly.

Front axle or joint broke. could possibly be sway or torsion bar, but most likely it was the axle. Double check tie rod end while your at it

There are so many things that may have broken or came loose,The best thing to do it have it checked out again,It may be something that they didn't tighten or something that was over looked the first time.

Vibrates terribly over 65 mph


sounds like you have a wheel alignment problem. Not enough castor set. Have the front end checked out for loose worn bits. If you have a steering shocky in the system it is probably shot and not doing the job of stabilising the steering. Remember if the springs are a bit flat IE the front end is a bit low then the whole steering geometery alters and negative castor results as what you have described

My 1989 Chevey Celebrity started shaking the other day the front part of the car, not like the front end is messed up but it shakes.


Could be a wheel, tire, or axle shaft.
You could rotate the tires front to back and see if the vibration moves.
If it does the problem is one of the tires or wheels.
If it stays in the front, its probably one of the axle shafts. It could also be a hub bearing or something loose in the suspension. But a loose suspension part would normally show up when you hit a bump rather than on a smooth road.

Vibration from about 40-60 mph is usually attributed to wheel balancing, but the onset when you hit a bump seems to indicate play in the steering linkages (tie rods etc) or suspension members and stabiliser bar rubbers but you had that all checked out, that brings us back to the wheel balancing.

A few possibilities.... bent rim, broken steel belt in tire, or a wheel weight that keeps the tire/wheel combination in balance has fallen off. Not sure how big the bump was, so other options would be suspension related. I would check the tire and/or wheel first.

Check your steering stability bar I had the same problem and it turned out that I had bent that bar.

The death wobble is basically when you are driving your lifted jeep down the road and the front end starts to shake violently. It can happen at virtually any speed, though mostly above 40 mph or so, and is a frightening experience, especially for those witnessing it for the first time. Now it doesn’t throw you off the road or anything … the front end just shakes. And the only way to stop it is to slow down and pull over. So it wasn’t that hard to get used to at first. But as it happened more and more, it seemed to get more and more out of control.

Shaking Stering Wheel in a 2006 Jeep


If it shake only when the brakes are applied, then it is a brake issue/ uneven wear on the pads & discs.
There are upper and lower control arms, but if they are bolted tight, it shouldn't be the issue. If you hear clicking, check out you CV joints.
Have you rotated you tires? Patterns can wear in and cause lots of shaking.

Check wheel balance,
check steering linkages for loosness - such as tie rod ends, steering rack linkages etc,
check driveline for worn/loose joints and bearings.

It sounds like you need a tune change at least the wires and plugs it also could be a worn or broke motor or tranny mount.
