HI there! Timing is set by the ecm. If you have a timing problem then it is likely with the timing belt itself.

1996 Subaru Legacy l 2.2 liter engine no spark: good fuse and fusible link, new coil, new fuel pump relay, good igniter.

Some older soobs have bad/intermittent Crank Position Sensors.

also, check the timing belt system for slipped crank/cam timing.

I'm trying to adjust the timing on the subaru 1997 outback legacy 2.5 engine and it seems to not be correct.

The ignition timing is not adjustable. It is computer controlled by the crank sensor, cam sensor and knock sensor. Would be easier to help you if I knew why you were trying to adjust it. Have a great day.

Like to know how to set timing on a 92 suberu. all

The '92 Subaru Legacy uses a distributorless ignition system. No adjustment is possible/necessary. The computer adjusts the timing continuously.

You can check the timing if you have a timing light. The spec for engines with a turbo charger is 15 degrees plus or minus 8 degrees at 700 RPM. Non-turbo engines are 20 degrees plus or minus 8 degrees at 700 RPM.
