You need to check the throttle readings and make sure the engine control module is seeing that the throttle is closed if it can,t see the throttle is closed it won,t operate the idle control system this can be down to a dirty throttle body faulty throttle position switch sometimes the idle speed needs to be adapted using diagnostic equipment

SOUND LIKE IDLE SPEED CONTROL NOT WORKING. ALSO YOUR THROTTLE VALVE ON THROTTLE BODY COULD BE DIRTY.FULL OF BUILD UP OF GUM AND CARBON.IF LOOKS DIRTY REMOVE THROTTLE BODY.CLEAN THE VALVE USING GUM OUT THROTTLE BODY CLEANER. ALSO REMOVE ALL ELECTRICAL PARTS AND PLASTIC PARTS.THE CLEANER WILL DAMAGE IT.BESURE WEAR SAFETY GLASSES.SO YOU WONT GET CLEANER IN EYES.IF THIS DONT HELP. THEN YOUR IDLE. SPEED CONTROL NOT WORKING.DEALERSHIP HAS TO REPLACE IT AND REPROGRAM IDLING.

Try cleaning the throttle body, it collect junk that passes through the air filter and will shut air flow down when in idle mode. This can be done with a clean rag and tooth brush with carb cleaner. Spay the carb cleaner on the rag NOT in the throttle body and use the toothbrush to reach inside.

2000 dodge ram 5.9 is cutting off at stops

clean the idle air control vavle with spray carb cleaner. clean the throttle plate and bore as well.

The IAC controls your idle speed and may be sticky due to deposits. The cleaning should take care of the stalling problem.

REPLACED STARTER AND BATTERY,BUT ENGINE WONT STAY RUNNING WITH OUT FOOT ON GAS?

you may need to clean the throltte body, and then start the engine and hold the rpms high for a minute, then slowly reduce the gas pedal to idle, you blanked out the memory, now it needs to learn the idle speed again.

Have a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500. Truck runs fine until it heats up and the termostat kicks in. It will not idle and the rpms go up and down between 300 and 1000 then stalls. When on the highway it runs fine...

likely your throttle position sensor or idle air control valve. Try disconnecting each one when the problem starts if it corrects you have found the culprit.

Dodge ram 1500 engine rpms surge at freeway speed

those sensors could cause the issue, clean the MAF 1st, also clean the idle system using the following procedure, the IAC can cause cruise surge. I use this to cure these problems all the time.

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve (IAC) and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
