Sounds like a problem in the evap emissions system possibly. If the check engine light is on, take the car to an autoparts store and have them scan the computer for any fault codes stored there. This will help narrow down the cause of the problem and end speculation. Hope this helped and best wishes.

SOURCE: filling the gas tank 2000 chevy impala

make sure that the little hose is clear of any restrictions and you can blow through it this will be the vent tube for the fuel tank. there is also a check ball that may be lodged in the tank and it is located in the tank right where the fill tube connects to the tank. you should be able to disconnect the tube and move it around with your finger. thanks and keep me updated or if you run into a problem

the most common problem that i see is spiders built a web inside the vent hose off the canister, take a look inside the hose for a web, sometimes thel make it inside the valve, if thats the case then clean out vent valve or replace, the canister and valve are at rear of car near fuel tank.heres a diagram of it,this will help you locate the vent valve, hope this helps.6278b5f.gif

The gas tank fills slowly and turns off the pump

some cars do not allow refilling the gas tank too rapidly. If slightly turning the handle of the pump filler when pumping doesn't help, maybe there's another problem. Has this always been the case, or has this issue just started recently?

While filling up our 2000 Toyota Echo at the gas station the pump at the gas island keeps shutting off. Takes forever to fill the tank.

this is becoming a common problem, what is going on with your car is that as you fill the fuel tank you have to displace the air inside the tank( as the fuel goes in the air has to come out ) this is done by the purge system, as the fuel goes in the air is displaced threw a purge canaster the canster trapes any fuel vapers that are in the displaced air and as you are driving the car the vapors are burned by the engine, this canister is either pluged or the valve that opens and closes the canister is stuck so as you fill the tank the air can not get out so you get back pressure in the fill neck and this causes the pump to shut off, bottom line you need to have the purge system checked. it might be a bad canister or a bad switch could also be one of the hoses to the canaster, heres the bad news to replace almost anything on the system the fuel tank will have to be removed and that can be expenceve....sorry

I have to hold the gas pump to put gas in my car. Is there air in the tank?

You have an EVAP System Malfunction that will
not allow you to fill the gas tank

There are several electrical solenoid type
valves in the system, one has failed

When you fill your tank all air is recovered by
the hose your using to fill it & put back in the
ground storage tank, not into the air

The failed vent valve in the EVAP System prevent
air out

Gas kicks back when fillling my 99 taurus is it my canister

When filling your tank, if the fill hose kicks off and/or gas kicks back up the tube it's an indication that the evaporative emissions vent tube is plugged, the cannister vent valve is not working correctly, or that there is a restriction in the fill pipe/hose. Unless the tank or pipe was recently worked on or part of an accident, you can eliminate it. I've found several concerns involing the vent tube and cannister vent valve. Spiders like to make webs inside of these items and the web blocks the air from escaping. When you fill your tank, the air inside needs to go somewhere. If it can't escape, it will cause the gas to back up and shut off the fill handle or kick gas back. There are ways to check this function with a scan tool and pressure machine but you can also do a visual inspection by disconnecting the valve and looking for webs or debris. You can also run water though the open line or blow shop air though to be sure it's clear. Good luck, if you can't leave four thumbs up, please ask for more information. Have a great day!

P0446 code came up. Car runs fine. I will tell you that filling it with gas is a major pain. Cant get more than about $6 to $7 dollars in gas before the fill tube fills up and makes the gas pump click off....

Hello: This code indicates a problem with the evap system vent valve. A stuck closed vent valve will affect the fueling, if air can,t get out of the tank while fueling you will have a hard time filling the tank. You didn't say what year/model you have so the valve may be near the fuel tank or inside the tank. This problem should not affect fuel mileage.

Hi; for some reason it has become almost impossible to fill the gas tank without the fill nozzle clicking off over and over again. we have had this scoped for possible obstructions and none were found....

It sounds like there is a problem with your fuel tank vent tube. It may be clogged, which won't allow air to escape as gas is being pumped in the tank. Typicall the vent tube is mounted as part of the fuel tank filler neck.
