Question about 1991 Volkswagen Jetta

1 Answer

Losing Coolant I have a 1991 jetta gl 8v. Every 5 days I have to add coolant to the resevoir since it's empty. I cannot detect a leak anywhere. What can I do?

No there is no white smoke coming out. I also noticed on my after market temp guage that the engine heats up to 240 degrees on hot days and usually it stays at around 200. Does this have anything to do with this?

You may very well have an internal leak as in a blown head gasket. If you see white smoke from the exhaust and it smells sweet that is a definate sign you do. You may also notice a white foam on the underside of the oil cap and the oil level may be over full. Remove the radiator cap, engine cold, and start the engine. If you see air bubbles escaping you have a blown head gasket or cracked head. Stop driving the car until you verify this with a compression test. Severe engine damage will occur if you continue to drive this car, if the head gasket is blown.

The temperature going up to 240 is suspect. That is a little high. 200 is normal and even 220 is not uncommon. The coolant is going somewhere and if you do not have a blown head gasket, it may very well be leaking on the exhaust manifold and evaporating. Or it could be leaking out the weep hole of the water pump and evaporating. I suggest you take it to a trusted mechanic and have a pressure test run on the cooling system. You will then know where it is leaking and why. I would not ignore this as it could be serious.

I have a 2005 jetta gls. There is a small leak in the coolant resevoir so I added a small amount of distilled water since I didn't have coolant. when the car is idle the engine rpms slowly pick up

Yes safe to drive. Just keep an eye on the coolant level.. I didnt have the problem with the RPMs going up, but i didnt have a crack in my reservoir. I replace it once and after 4 months it happened again. Had to get another one. Not sure why it does this. But i ran it for 3 or so months with just adding coolant when needed. It started to over heat once so i had to stop (ran low on coolant). So just keep an eye on it.

Gs300 coolant is bubbling in resevoir, but temp is fine ?

Get coolant temp sensor checked.

Get the coolant pressure tested, its definitely leaking coolant. You will need to get the coolant running line.

Pressure test will help you to know from where exactly coolant/refrigerant is getting leaked.

I have 2 problems, the low coolant light comes on and the air conditioning blows warm, does it have a leak in air conditioner and where can I add coolant (what kind?); and the security light comes on and...

Low coolant is detected by a sensor inside the plastic resevoir tank. These things lie, so if the resevoir has plenty of coolant, it's probably a dirty or faulty sensor. If you can't see coolant, add it directly to the resevoir. As for the A/C, you can purchase an A/C pressure gauge or complete check and fill kit at a parts store and follow the directions for using it. If the pressure reads low, with the car running and A/C on full blast, add refrigerant until you hear the compressor turn on. Check your gauge again. Once you have it to pressure, you should be good to go. If it never gets there, you have problems. If it gets there and stops working again days later, you have a slow leak.

This may be the first sign that your water pump is failing. First sign is a leak. Crawl on your back under car if you can see if you can see it coming from front of engine near a pully that would turn your water pump. There is a "weep hole" it may be driping from.

Radiator is empty

Always fill you radiator & resevoir with a 50/50 mix of coolant / water. Your vehicle should have dexcool which is a red/orange colored coolant. You can buy a universal equivalent which is premixed and is yellow (not green). It is safe to add universal coolant but not green antifreeze. Premixed (it will say on jug) would be your safe bet. Fill the radiator, add to overflow tank to full cold line, run vehicle until fully warmed up. Let cool back down & then recheck.
Don't forget to check for leaks....it is not normal to have your coolant get that low. You likely are leaking coolant.

If this helps please rate me!
You can do it.
