You should check if you have voltage coming from the ignition switch, remember that voltage from the switch is the one that energise the solenoid , is easy to check with just a test light, if you don't have that voltage , you may have a bad ignition swish or an open wire.also check the fuses

Check the wires on the driverside inner fender they are known to carrode and not allow power to the selonoid. They may carrode inside so wiggle and pull on them you will see the insulation stretch if it is bad inside.

Truck wont start

If the solenoid is clicking, the usual causes are a faulty solenoid, low battery voltage, bad connections, or a faulty starter.
A dead cell in the battery will do it too.
Can you use jumper cables to power the starter directly ?
It takes at least 10 volts to activate that solenoid.

I changed out the starter solenoid and now when i try to connect the neg. cable to the battery the truck tries to start. what could this be/

recheck all of your wire connections to both the starter solenoid and to the battery make sure nothing is reverse.

remember starting over is not a bad thing, it just mean that your doing it right.

Truck will not start how can i tell if its a starter or selonoid

does it spin real fast without clanging and grinding against the flywheel? if so then its probably the solenoid bad. do you have to hit the starter with a hammer then it works? it is probably bad brushes or a worn motor. eather way i think you can only get a new starter and solenoid together not sold seperate. check for bad battery cables (loose).

When i turn the key to start my truck. i just one

Solenoid relay winding .
When energized by the ignition key, it gets warm and go open (releasing the starting contacts).\
Have you tried bypassing the solenoid with a screwdriver or a jumper cable? Do that to confirm my diagnosis.

You should check your battery cables with an ohmmeter and see if they have any resistance, they should be at 0 ohms or just alittle over, but could possibly be the starter solenoid also.I had this same problem with my Toyota last year, hard starting sometimes needed a jump and then the alt went bad, turned out to be the solenoid was shorting intermittantly.Hope this helps.
