Question about 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis

1 Answer

2001 mercury grand marquis. Engine stutters or hesitates with jerking when lightly accelerating. Seems like an air, fuel, or spark delivery problem. At wide open throttle this problem is not as noticeable. The spark plugs and a rectangular shaped vacuum sensor or controller were replaced. Transmission fluid/filter, air filter, and oil is changed frequently.

Start car and use a squirt bottle of water to wet the wires and coil, if you see it spark or run rough one or both are bad, repair the wires first as they are more common.

Temperature light and hesitation during acceleration.

You could have air in your coolant, causing this false reading. the hesitation could be related, if the air 'bubble' found its way to the coolant sensor.

Jerking and hesitation between 35mph and 65mph

Time to go get it diagnosed. Could be a tunup issue or cranks sensor or fuel pump. You most likely have a code stored to help diagnosing

Jerking on normal acceleration.

You might try a TPS switch. It should set a code but yours did't. The throttle position sensor sets the spark advance and fuel flow to match. The other possibility is the EGR system which also should set a code.
If you have not changed the fuel filter, try that because if you accellerate hard the fuel slooshes to the back of the tank.
In normal driving the contaminents lay on the bottom of the tank.

My son has a 2001 Mercury Cougar and it has a slight hesitation problem when you ease on to the accelerator starting off and also at certain speeds (low rpm's). We changed the air filter, plugs and plug...

I assume the check engine light is not on. I suspect you may have a slight vacuum leak, especially if it idles a little rough. Check all under hood vacuum hoses for cracks and make sure they are all connected.I also highly recommend you replace the fuel filter if you have no done so.

1996 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS WITH OCCASIONAL SLUGGISHNESS ON ACCELERATION AND SEEMS LIKE IT MAY BE USING MORE GAS THAN USUAL. HAS BEEN WELL TAKEN CARE OF, REG. OIL CHANGES, NEW FUEL FILTER 2 YRS AGO-DR

I would use 10W40 in the 96 and 5W20 or 30 in the 2002.

For the 96 with sluggishness, you need to gently clean the MAF sensor wires with carb cleaner and a toothbrush. It is in the air intake tube. After cleaning, disconnect the battery for 1/2 hour, then reconnect so the computer can relearn the clean sensor. Drive for 10 miles, it will run rough until it relearns.

Section 03-14: Engine Controls, Electronic 1996 Town Car, Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis Workshop Manual
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor The mass air flow sensor (MAF sensor) (12B579):
  • is mounted on the corner of the engine air cleaner (ACL) (9600).
  • uses a hot wire sensing element to measure the amount of air entering the engine; air passing over the hot wire causes it to cool.
  • sends out an analog voltage signal to the PCM (12A650) to determine the intake air mass. The PCM will then calculate the required fuel injector pulse width to provide the desired air/fuel ratio.
The mass air flow sensor hot wire sensing element and housing are calibrated as a unit and must be serviced as a complete assembly.

Upon acceleration the car jerks then smooths out under heavy acceleration

Check engine light on? Most problem is spark plug wire breaking down. Replace spark plugs and wires.
