The drive belt should be changed when it has visable signs of cracks or damage, or i like to change them every three years, and keep the old belt in the back of the car for a spare in case something happens.

This says 2001 ford escort zx2. my car is 2002, which is what i typed in. are they the same serpentine belt configuration?

engines are made in series, and cars with close years usually use the same engine block. The basic belt lay out is thus going to be the same, however different features on the car may mean different belt lengths. So you need to know which engine size and what features are on your car to get the right belt. advance and autozone carry most belts, especially for domestic makers.

Cant find tdc markings on escort 1997 1.8

Click on the following free, direct LinkS. It has all the Timing Belt Diagrams you will need, complete with Instructional and Directional Diagrams to set your Timing.
To my knowledge the 1997 Ford Escort only had a 2.0L not a 1.8L.
The 1996 had available the 1.8L and 1.9L. I could be mistaken - my apology.
In any case:
The 1st Link is for the 1996 Ford Escort 1.8L
The 2nd Link is for the 1997 Ford Escort 2.0L
Compare/use.

At how many miles should you change the timing belt on a 2004 honda civic?

7 years or:
Replace the belt at 60,000 miles (100,000 km) if you regularly drive your vehicle in one or more of these conditions: in very high temperatures (over 110°F, 43°C) or in very low temperatures (under 20°F, 29°C).

Water pump on escort

If the engines are Zetec DOHC 16v, I would suggest that you source a new water pump for your engine. To change the water pump is not very easy for the average DIY. I would entrust the job to a vehcile technician and get the drive belts changed at the same time as the anti freeze would have contaminated your drive belts.

Water leak

Unless there is any visible wear to the timing belt itself there is no reason to have to change the belt as well as the water pump.
